Welcome And Tonight’s Picks
SPEAKER_03Welcome to the Whiskey Chasers, where we talk about our passion for whiskey and its history, either amongst ourselves or while interviewing distilleries. I'm Steve. I'm Nick, and I'm Chris. Please enjoy responsibly while enjoying this week's episode of The Whiskey Chasers. 97 points, 97 points. Uh I don't know if it's at the San Francisco.
SPEAKER_04No, it's it's wine enthusiasts. That's what cracks me up because this is a Canadian whiskey, but we got 97 points for a wine enthusiast.
SPEAKER_01You can't go by the ratings. You never know.
SPEAKER_04What wine enthusiast is drinking Canadian whiskey?
SPEAKER_01What all different random obscure awards has it won? You know, double bronze in the the Swan and Dolphin uh expo. It's like, okay, that's that's prestigious.
SPEAKER_03Dorg gives it two thumbs up. George says two thumbs up. So we have two pike tobaccos
Why Ratings And Awards Mislead
SPEAKER_03to decide between tonight. So we're gonna try this whiskey first.
SPEAKER_04Two bottles that we've never had.
SPEAKER_03Figure out what it is because yeah, we've never had either one of these. They're both Canadian whiskies. One of them is finished. This one is not. The one we're trying today is uh lot 40. It is a Hiram Walker and Sons distillery product, and it's pretty, pretty well known, I think. Uh for Canadian.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, their cast strength is uh highly sought after.
SPEAKER_01I thought it had a wax on it at first.
SPEAKER_04The price tag between their normal proof and their like cast strength is absolutely insane. Like the the the jump between the two, but I think it's because it's so sought after.
SPEAKER_03And what we have today is not the cast strength. This is just 90 proof, yes.
SPEAKER_04But just based off of the smell, I think I'm I think I'm gonna be a fan.
SPEAKER_01Oh, hmm.
SPEAKER_04That's different. It smells rye. It is rye.
SPEAKER_01It's rye, but it's um it's less sweet and more oaky for a Canadian. Okay, yeah. I think it's almost astringent in a good way. If it sounds terrible, astringent sounds terrible, but that's kind of what it is in a good way. I'm getting a lot of like malt and chocolate on it too.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, a lot of malt.
SPEAKER_01And it's a hundred percent rye, hundred percent rye coming out of Canada. I think it's neutral enough we can do the scarecrow. I think so. You agree?
SPEAKER_04When you when you sent the text that you got scarecrow, I don't know if any of you guys are fans of uh Parks and Rec, but Andy, Andy has like bands that he's played, just one band that he's always played in, but they keep changing up their name, and one of the names is Scarecrow Boat. So I immediately when you said Scarecrow, it's like, oh
First Impressions Of Lot 40 Rye
SPEAKER_04Scarecrow Boat.
SPEAKER_01Now, this is this year, 2026's uh Scarecrow by Warped their collaboration with Cornell and Deal. As warped and Cornell and Deal, they are separate companies, right? Tech, they're separate companies because warped is a cigar brand. They started dabbling into pipe tobacco a few years ago. They've always sourced their stuff from Cornell and Deal from the inception.
SPEAKER_04Okay, because the majority of their stuff is Burley's, right? What? For for their their base of what they do is uh for for Cornell and Deal?
SPEAKER_01No, for warped for warped, oh for pipe tobacco, yeah. Uh yeah, I wouldn't say it was primarily burlies. I think warped, and I mean, as far as I know, Lido, Lido, Lidoussi, uh smoking pipes and Cornell and Deal are kind of the same company. I think they've acquired one of them acquired the other, kind of a deal. Yeah, I don't know if or which cigar brands they own. I bet they do own some. I don't know if they owned warped. They might. I don't think so, but they keep it separate. Yeah, but at any rate, um, I think warped when they decided to go into the pipe tobacco kind of business, they were like, We don't know piped, we know cigars. Yeah, so they've given complete free license to Cornell and Deal. Um, they might have been like, hey, you know, let's try this, let's try that kind of a deal. But as far as like the blends go, that's all Cornell and Deal. So, you know, so it's so to say warped is a Burley-based blend uh uh products are Burley-based, but that would be more like Cornell and Deal is Burley-based, which is true, right? They do do primarily use Burley, but it's really just Cornell and Deal's. It's Jeremy Reeves, he's the mastermind behind it. So I really think he has full creative license. So this is basically this may as well might as well say Cornell and Deal on it, right? Kind of a deal.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, they're not owned together, I just double checked. Okay, yeah, double checked. They have a you know a working relationship, they seem to do a lot together, but they are completely separate companies.
SPEAKER_01And warped is good uh cigars, they actually do more flavored cigars, not all, but uh they do have, and that kind of goes wrong with their tobaccos, they're kind of aromatic with quality leaf. They're the pipes, like actual true pipe smokers aromatic blend because it's good components of aged, you know, sometimes heirloom tobaccos and whatnot. And then they freaking just like this one smells amazing. It smells really good. It does smell so good. I cannot wait. So they do Scarecrow, it's not every year. Um, sometimes it's like every other year. It's like random that they've been doing it. It's always limited. So um this is one out of out of their you know, air quotes fall Halloween blends. For me, for Cornell and Dio, this is by far my favorite. Yeah. Because I mean they do mon the monster stuff, and then they do there's other um warped, there's other warped blends that are kind of Halloween-esque.
SPEAKER_00Um, and then they do Cornell and Dio has done like the beast and um the haunting, things like that. But as far as like what they have done in the past, they continue to do this, Scarecrow is like
Warped Scarecrow And Who Blends It
SPEAKER_00the best. So good.
SPEAKER_03Nice. All your stuff in that I'll talk a little bit about Lot 40, our our whiskey for the night. So it is Hiram Walker and Sons Distillery. The Lod 40 brand started a long time ago, so that's an old brand that's been now revitalized. So Lod 40 brand came about after uh Hiram Walker established his distillery in 1858 uh in Canada, just right across the border there. Um, and I'm gonna link in the show notes for this another podcast. So there's a there's a different podcast called Whiskey Lore, and he just he's just started his own like kind of uh uh hall of fame of whiskey. And Hiram Walker is the second inductee in his little creation thing that he does. So I'm gonna just kind of link that episode in the show notes here. But uh, so it talks a lot about how Hiram Walker got started in Canada and why he got started in Canada. Lot 40, though, this brand came about in 1998 with master blender Michael Booth, D. Michael Booth. It was the recipe came from an eight 19th century family recipe, so an old 1800s family recipe. His ancestor was Joshua Booth, who was a settler who granted land, designated lot number 40 in Ontario after the American Revolution. So related to John Wilkes? I not not uh yeah. I did search that because I had the same thought. We're sure about that, or at least they just don't claim at least not claimed, it's unclaimed evidence. This bottle came back in 2012. So 2012 is when Lot 4 was revitalized. Yes. And I did not realize that uh Haram Walker and Son's distillery was in Windsor, Canada. It's like right across the border from Detroit. Oh, really? Like, yeah, like right now.
SPEAKER_04Well, that makes sense because they they did uh was it Canadian Club? And didn't that start out of uh Michigan or Chicago and then during Prohibition moved up? Moved up there, yes. Yep. So it makes sense that they went right above Detroit.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, so largest distillery in North America is right there in Windsor, like the Windsor Castle, like the Windsor Castle.
SPEAKER_01I think that's probably why it's named that. I think so. Because I mean they're still they're still owned.
SPEAKER_03I mean not owned, but there's still a a uh a uh territory of of England, although you would think it would be France because a lot of them speak French right there, and they would like to not be, but you think it happened as of yet because they're French
Lighting Up And What’s In Scarecrow
SPEAKER_03Canadian, yeah. The French Canadian, but nope, France does not own any part of them.
SPEAKER_01I think it ran out. Yeah, unless you've refilled it, it means it. You want some you got some matches, or yeah, I got matches. Now, this might smoke a bit wet because it's you know, freshly POP 10, but do you know?
SPEAKER_03Does it hold true for warped that their tobacco tends to be a little wet because of it being made by Cornell and Deal?
SPEAKER_01Uh, I think it's mostly be just because they're aromatic blends that they're a little bit. Is that true? Yeah, but they're they typically come a little wet. Because there are some Cornell and Dale blends that come just ready to smoke.
unknownRight.
SPEAKER_03But I know we've talked before that a lot of times they tend to be a touch on the wet side for centering. Yeah, oh yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01I get what you're saying. Yeah. Um, I think this one's mostly due to the fact that it's uh now that did come in a really lovely crumble cake. And I pulled it apart before you guys got here to kind of air it out a little bit, dry it out a little bit. But it actually comes in such a great little cake, and then it's so easy to just kind of compress and it falls right into that broken ribbon, and it's it's really great, like the way that they have that thing, because in that cake form, it's gonna age great. Um, but when you're ready to smoke it, it just crumbles so perfectly, and then it I think it packs pretty well.
SPEAKER_03I'm the last one to light up here, and the room note in here is pretty fantastic.
SPEAKER_04I'm very curious because I've I've got one of warped. I've haven't been too impressed with it. One that I I tend to stay away from.
SPEAKER_03Was that the espresso one?
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So I'm curious on how this if it's just me and warped or aromatics in general, or if it's uh, I mean, and as and it actually that scene espresso is one of the better aromatics, but I it's still an aromatic. But if this is like any of the other warped stuff, as you go down the bowl, it gets better. Not that it's not great right away, but it will uh open up and the flavors will will get. I mean, as you go down the bowl, it's gonna change the experience. Will change now. I can't remember what it all it says on there as far as the blends go.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, the blend is uh aged Virginia's matured burglaries, and red Virginia Cavendish pressed and sliced into crupple cakes.
SPEAKER_01And then they won't talk, I don't they don't think they talk to the topping or whatever that they're using, the casing, but it smells like you want to eat it.
SPEAKER_03It really does. It smells like for me, it's very caramely. Caramel apple, maybe candy caramel, which they're they're saying caramel caramel apple, but I think it's more just I guess got a lot of caramel, caramel, yeah.
SPEAKER_01It's very caramely, and candy corn for me. Little candy corn, like the good, the good kind of candy corn.
SPEAKER_03There is two other versions of this lot 40. Oh, there's two, yeah. So there's the cast strength. Uh they also have a dark oak, which is finished and heavily charred Virginia oak barrels.
SPEAKER_04Virginia oak, yeah, or Virgin Oak or Virgin Oak? I'm sorry, Virgin Oak. Virgin oak, okay.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, Virgin Oak.
SPEAKER_04I was like Virginia oak, that's interesting.
SPEAKER_03I didn't know they had their own. And there is there are cast strength expressions of of this in different versions, also. There's a pork cask.
SPEAKER_04Oh, so they did like finished, okay.
SPEAKER_03Um, and an oroso cask. So all three of them for cash strength.
SPEAKER_04Now Canadian rye, all rye said.
SPEAKER_03All right. It does say when I was looking it up, it did say it was 90% unmalted Canadian rye and 10% malted, typically from them. So not necessarily that's what this is, but overall. Uh it's distilled in the uh pot still. Oh, it's a pot still, okay.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, they've got even on their, I think on the bottle they have stuff for like the pot still, like they're big in the the copper pot still.
SPEAKER_01I'm not sure, but is that typically a Canadian thing? I didn't think it was. I don't know.
SPEAKER_03Copper pot. Uh that's so mass-produced, I think. Uh on facility, so they make a lot of it like that.
SPEAKER_00I just didn't think a lot of Canadians, uh Canadian whiskies were made in pot stills.
SPEAKER_01I think once we get this going, it's gonna be good.
unknownYeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00It's gonna take a look at the pipe.
SPEAKER_03If ever anybody's wondering. And the whiskey itself, like I said, it for me it has kind of that multi uh app uh chocolatey kind of feel, which goes really well with this
Lot 40 Origins And Hiram Walker
SPEAKER_03kind of caramely topped topped pipe tobacco.
SPEAKER_04I mean, we've had one other 100% rye Canadian whiskey that was cash drink, the Alberta premium. But this is nothing like that, from what I remember. This has the rye backbone, but it's also got more complexity to it than just rye.
SPEAKER_03And it's 90 proof. I think it drinks hotter than 90 proof, but not by a lot, not in a bad way. Like I would if if you would have asked me to guess, I would have said this was 100 proof.
SPEAKER_01I could see this being a good cask strength though, too.
SPEAKER_03Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, for sure. Because 90 proof's good and it's actually going this proof is going really well with the pipe. I actually think too much might be too much with the this pipe, but I would say I would like to try this at a higher proof, too. But 90 is great. It's it's not basic, it's not like ho hum, you know.
SPEAKER_03Right. Normally when you get under that hundred proof, things change at a at 100. Like things things kind of get more complex, tend to this is really good for a 90 proof in that way. And I think like I said, I it for me it drinks a little bit hotter, but I I mean that in a good way, like that's a good thing.
SPEAKER_04Especially for a Canadian. That's the weird thing because we we've done we did two other Canadians already, and we're going along with this idea of for Chris of like Canadians done well, right? And I think we hit the nail on the head last for the last two from both of those being done well from Found North. I think cash drink Canadian whiskey in general is hard to find. It's not a very common thing, but I also don't think it's a very common thing to find a bottle that is under 100 proof that drinks hotter than what it is. I feel like that's that's a little harder to find too.
SPEAKER_03And if you do, it's usually because it's young, or it's like it's it's it's it's a proof issue or like an age issue, like it's a bad thing. Usually, if something is under 100 proof and it drinks hotter than that, I I think usually for me that's a bad thing. Usually that comes out as really proofy or really astringent in the bad way, whereas this one is not that way.
SPEAKER_01This tobacco is so delicious. I don't know if you've gotten to that point yet. I think it's because I'm trying to keep it lit, I'm really puffing it. But I get it's actually one of the few aromatics that I really taste the way it smells. I mean, it's so caramely, but it's like homemade caramel.
SPEAKER_03Right. And I don't know if that's just because it's um because I'm puffing on it, I'm getting the smoke right back into my nose. And so like I'm smelling, I'm I'm almost smelling the room note while smoking it. Um, but I feel the same way. Like I'm getting a lot of caram notes.
SPEAKER_01It's almost like my stem is sweet, like a like a like those uh sweet tip uh swisher sweets. Oh, yeah. You ever had one of those? As soon as you put it in, you're like, oh, that's sweet. That's kind of almost like the way my stem tastes. Just because I'm getting so much of that caramel off of this. Yeah, it's really good. It really is. It's just being a little bit of a it's being fickle because it's a little wet.
unknownYeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but other than that, man, this is this is fantastic. And I think it is pairing really well with this Canadian, and uh it's it almost makes this drink not even less, even less sweet, yes, than uh, you know, than it is, which is great for a Canadian because those things are usually so sweet.
unknownRight.
SPEAKER_01This is almost the whiskey is breaking the pipe up instead of the other way around, kind of.
SPEAKER_03And yeah, I feel like uh yeah, I think it is
Canada Pop Culture Detour
SPEAKER_03the whiskey's becoming less sweet. I think I agree with you there because of the tobacco.
SPEAKER_01Now, when I hear lot uh 50, lot 40 or lot 40, whatever. Yeah, any of it, I always think of a trailer park. Yeah, you know what I mean? That's how they do it. They break them into if you've ever gone there to for whatever reason, uh, they break them into lots. Yeah, lot soever. Yeah. So every time I hear that or see that, I always think of trailer park. Yeah, so I don't know why, but uh I don't know if that's a good thing or bad thing. If it makes me feel feel like it's like less quality, I don't know.
SPEAKER_03My wife was trying to get me to watch Trailer Park Boys. That's a great show. Oh my gosh. Uh she really likes it. It's so funny. I really like Leonter Kenny. And so when I was watching Leonter Kenny, she was like, this like Trailer Park Boys goes right along with this. This is a very similar kind of idea.
SPEAKER_04Is that out of Canada too? It is out of Canada.
SPEAKER_03It's taking place in Canada. It's kind of similar humor. And it's kind of, yeah, kind of a similar humor. Um, I didn't like Trailer Park Boys as much, but it grew on me. I was able to watch more of it. I I liked it as I as I kept going. They're both good shows. Yeah. Uh they have a the the Letter County guys have a new show. I think it's actually a movie, actually, though. Um uh and it's about uh the guy that plays Shoresy or that guy, he's the guy that runs the whole thing, he's the main guy. Um, he's one of he's like uh there's a lot of French Canadian pieces of this, so they they speak French and a lot of it, I think. Um, but I think he's like the wild bear, I think is what they call him or something. He's just like this Nimwit kind of middle brother, and so I think they're kind of like trying to keep him in line or keep him from going crazy. I'm not really sure. Just off it, there's only been a trailer, so I don't know too much yet. But I'm curious to see how it'll go because I've liked everything else they've put out that Letter Kenny. I haven't seen Shorty. I haven't seen Shorty. Well, Shorzy, I my wife likes Shorty better than Letterkenny, big yeah, and so because she wasn't a big fan of Letter Kenny, just for a few of the characters really did she did not like she really hates Gail. I don't think any woman likes Gail is yeah, she's a lot so uh and then a few other things like that. So she wasn't a huge fan of that. Shorty was more the hockey story, and so it always would chirp down a little bit, maturpic people about their mom or whatever it was. There's a little bit of actual character growth, like it's actual a little bit went a little bit beyond just a normal comedy. So Shorty, I really like Shorty, it was a good show. I don't think I watched the last season yet, but or if it's out yet. But yeah, because they touch on hockey and litter kinny, but not like yeah, it just kind of they're not like the main characters don't play it, you know. Yeah, it's one of those just group of people kind of thing. Yeah, so if I'm thinking Canada, I usually think of those shows more than anything else.
SPEAKER_04Those shows and Canadian geese maple syrup. What's the isn't there John Candy Canadian bacon?
SPEAKER_01Canadian bacon, yeah.
SPEAKER_04I think of Canadian bacon.
SPEAKER_01Yep, I don't think I've ever seen that one. Really? It's a good one, though. It's a good one. I'm a John Candy.
SPEAKER_04It's a good one.
SPEAKER_03It's good.
SPEAKER_04Um it's chaotic, but it's a it's a typical chaotic John Candy.
SPEAKER_03Up there, yeah, yep, yeah. He's a Canadian.
SPEAKER_01It's kind of like planes and trains and automobiles and Uncle Buck and stuff.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, but a little bit like uh they end up going to Canada and almost starting a war with Canada by accident. Not yeah, not on purpose. And so just because they just like stumbled into it and all of a sudden we have to like save them for some reason, and it's just like the president needs to needs to like up his numbers, and so he decides how he's gonna do that is start a war with Canada.
SPEAKER_04Isn't there isn't there a scene where they have like a dump truck or like a like a big old truck that they're driving that they write something on the side of it or it gets like vandalized on the side and a cop pulls them over, yeah. And he they all think they're gonna get to get in trouble for whatever's written on it, and he's like, You forgot the like apostrophe, or you forgot like some accent mark grammar. Fixes the grammar and then he moves on. That's funny. It's like something against Canadians, yeah, like something really offensive towards them. It is a good one, it is a good classic.
SPEAKER_00I feel like I've seen most of John Candy's movies too, and I haven't seen that one.
SPEAKER_04I was surprised that I've seen one that you haven't. That that impresses me.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, there you go. Normally, that's not a thing. That's not a yeah. I was reminded recently of Wagon's East. That's a good one. That was another one that was a really good one with him and uh uh Matthew Perry.
SPEAKER_04Okay, do you guys remember? Speaking of John Candy, do you guys remember uh was it called Blank Check? Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01He was in that. He was a limo driver. He was the limo driver, right?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, where yeah, okay.
SPEAKER_01So it's a kid. No, he wasn't the limo driver. He looked like the limo driver, it was a different guy. Okay, I take it back. He wasn't in it, but he looked that it was a very like that actor was aspiring to be John Candy in that movie. But he was a good, he was in other things. I was gonna say, what else was he in? Man, I don't know. We'd have to we'd have to look it up. And I want to know now. I'm sure he was in other things. What's about blank check? Blank blank check, which is it was a great movie. There were a couple of stars in questionable. With that female, yeah. When you're as a kid, you're like, yeah, and then as an adult, you're like, whoa, like that's she's a bit of a pedo.
SPEAKER_04We might need questions.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, like what were you in? She works for the FBI.
SPEAKER_04I saw some comedian talk about it, and he was like, he was like, you know, no one ever realizes or thinks about the fact that she works for the FBI. I'm pretty sure that her co-workers should probably look into her internet search history after the time with the boy. Like it's like kind of questionable.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, she's like, if you were a little bit Or something like that, like when's the next day?
SPEAKER_04Like, when can I take it on? And she's like, um, like 20 years, call me in 20 years. And he like negotiates down to 11, but he's six in the movie, which still puts him underage. Underage. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And she's like, Yeah, that's great. And and the whole time she's kind of leading him on in a way, I don't want to say a sexual way, but in a kid. You're waiting for them to make out at some point. Or they do kids at one point. Yeah. Oh, they do kids. Which is super like and he's he's young in that. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Again, as a kid, you look at it and you're like, who wouldn't want that? As an adult, you're like, uh, that's that's we might we might have questions. We have lots of questions, actually.
SPEAKER_03Uh his name is Richard Ducamen.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_03Uh sounds kind of Canadian. It does, he's from Saskatchewan. Oh, there you go. There you go. He was in space balls. He was a prison guard in the he was the he was a city worker in diehard, Walt. Okay. City worker. Oh, Walt. Yeah, everybody knows. Um, yeah, everyone knows Walt. Uh, he is he was in, he was a uh navigator in Hunt for Red October. Uh he was in Security Guard in Gremlins 2. A lot of supporting roles. So just yeah, a lot of he's Gus in Groundhog Day.
SPEAKER_01You know who he was in Space Balls? He's the guy when he comes, the guy comes up behind him and tries to do the Fulcan pinch. He goes, No, no, no, you're doing it all wrong. You gotta do it here. Then he hits him, he's like, Yeah, and then he like faints. I'm pretty sure that's the guy. Because now I'm thinking about that part. That's the guy. I'm pretty sure that's the guy. Yeah, great movie, Space Balls. I think also the guy Albert from Twin Peaks. Do you ever watch Twin Peaks? Albert, the FBI guy, uh, the guy that does like their autopsies and whatnot. He's kind of a turd. Uh, he was in blank check. He's the bad guy. Yeah. And then also, I think the like mob guy? The uh singer that does that one song, uh, is it Ice Cold Medina? Is that the same guy? Or there's a singer in that in blank check. He was like popular in like the 80s and 90s. I can't think of which singer it was.
SPEAKER_03Was he playing himself?
SPEAKER_01Or yeah, I think he's like playing. I don't know. He's like maybe playing himself. Juice? Juice, that's it.
SPEAKER_03Okay. Tone loke.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, whatever. He's done a couple of yeah, he's done some music. Pretty sure he used it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, he's uh oh, he sings a wild thing. Wild thing, yeah.
SPEAKER_01That's it. And and ice cold Medina, or is that somebody else? Funky Funky Cold Medina? Yeah, funky cold medina. That's it not ice cold, funky cold medina. Yeah, that's a great song, by the way. Both of them are fantastic. If you've never listened to Funky Cold Medina, the Funky Cold Medina, and then the wild thing. Yeah, do the wild thing.
SPEAKER_03You make my turn.
SPEAKER_01No, that's a different one. Oh, no, that's a different one. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay, he seemed not that right. Yeah, no, no, that's not the same guy. No, this one is the one where it goes pum, pum, pum. Let's do the wild thing. It's like uh talking about sex, basically. Yeah, she was real good at doing the wild thing.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it's so appropriate for a kid's movie.
SPEAKER_01It's not appropriate. Yeah, if you actually, if you listen to that song, you're like, oh, that's a bit uh there's some words in here, you know. You're like, wow, probably should not have this one, right? Sure, I know what the wild thing is. Yeah, it's actually good though. It's good music, like it's that old kind of 80s, 90s, like late 80s, early 90s, like kind of yeah, funky coal Medina. That's it, not ice cold, yeah. I knew that was a guy. Anyway, blank check. Blank check, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, not John
Why Canadian Whiskey Loves A Pipe
SPEAKER_04Candy, not not John Candy, yeah. But speaking of blank, thinking of blank canvas, I think I've just now, now that I've started enjoying pipes while we drink, I think I might know why you enjoy your Canadian whiskey. Because it is a blank canvas for whatever you're smoking. Yeah, yeah. It really adds to it a lot of it. It adds to what you're drinking, and what you drink also adds to what you're smoking.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I think if you have Canadian whiskey, and you might not uh maybe people have never articulated this, but I think people would agree with it. Uh, if you've ever had a Canadian whiskey and you ever thought it wasn't eh, you know what I mean? It's because it's missing something for a lot of people. Yeah, but you add a pipe and all of a sudden it's not missing anything. It's like like perfect. I think that's what you mean, right? Yeah, it goes a lot, it's a good blank canvas, it goes, it goes along with a lot of pipe tobacco. This bottle by itself wasn't bad, like it was good, yeah.
SPEAKER_04But then you add in the pipe and you're like, I just took it to a whole nother level. Like, I just I it enhanced it that much more to where it's now like, wow, there's more than just rye spice, there's more than just rye involved here. There's you almost it brings out that chocolate malt almost kind of feel with this pipe. It brings out that that chocolate, that kind of like but not like dark chocolate, it's more chocolate. Yeah, it's it's like a sweet milk chocolate kind of feel that it brings out and almost like a creaminess with that.
SPEAKER_03See, for me, now I just took another sip now that we've been smoking for a little while and stuff, it's almost changed to like a peanut butter for me. Oh, and so like I get more like not like maybe Reese's because of the chocolate aspect, but the but it's almost like my favorite peanut butter, which is Meyer brand honey roasted peanut butter. They do a honey roasted honey roasted one. That sounds fancy. I hate Jeff peanut butter. I love peanut butter. I'm a peanut butter guy. You like peanut butter? I like peanut butter because my favorite is Peter Pan. I love peanut crunchy or extra crunchy. I'm not a crunchy guy, not a crunchy, smooth, but uh creamy, but uh nothing wrong with that. Uh but yeah, I've never liked Jeff peanut butter.
SPEAKER_01I've always thought that it is so much different than Peter Pan is superior to Jeff.
SPEAKER_03Yes, so but off-brand peanut butter I've found is actually really good. Like Kroger and Meyer both have a really roasted off-brain, and the honey roasted one is really good. Now, uh before I had that, it was the honey roasted Peter Pan. Okay, so but that honey roasted just adds an extra layer of sweetness to it that I get a little bit more with this drink than like a traditional peanut butter.
SPEAKER_01See, and it also could be that you're moving your way down the pint, the bowl of the pint. Because for me, a lot of the caramel's gone, but I'm really getting a lot of apple. I'm getting a lot of like um honey crisp apple. Kind of that not sweet, but like semi-sweet, kind of bitter, um, kind of juicy, where you when you bite into like a fresh apple from the orchard, like a red one. That's what I'm getting on this pipe tobacco. And I think it's again playing well with this, and it could be the whiskey that's bringing it out. I'm not sure, but I'm getting less caramel, more apple.
SPEAKER_04I could see like uh apple spice with like the rye
Flavor Swings From Caramel To Apple
SPEAKER_04and this getting kind of like a caramel apple spice kind of feel, like um spiced apples or like an apple pie kind of spice.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah, spiced apples too. Yeah, I see what you're saying. Like where that's like cinnamon and the cooked down apples a little bit.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it is interesting how fast your glass went.
SPEAKER_01Oh, it went quick. Uh I to the point where I was like, man, I'm out. How do you think? What's happening? Like, man, I should have poured more. And I poured a good amount. If it was closer to me, I would be pouring more.
SPEAKER_04It can always be made closer. It could be. It can always be S TV. It could be made closer. There's a lot going on with this guy as far as flavor. But what would you expect to pay for lot 40 rye? 100% rye coming out of Canada. 90 proof, 90 proof.
SPEAKER_00Talk about an age.
SPEAKER_04Uh, I believe it's said to be between three and five.
SPEAKER_01You're not gonna put like an actual age on it. Because they blend, I mean, all that stuff's blended too, right?
SPEAKER_04I mean, it's uh typically incorporates stocks aged roughly three to five years. A blend of different different ones, yep. Uh-huh. Interesting. So I have uh you you got me onto these gems, yeah. And one of them that I started doing was uh give me the bottle fax, but also pair pipe tobacco or pair a cigar with it. And so for this one, it says it would pair a rich English or Balkan blend featuring Latikia and Orientals, such as Dunhill Peterson, my mixture. My mixture is what it would buy. What it would uh recommend.
SPEAKER_01I could see that. And we we debated doing an English. We did, yeah.
SPEAKER_03It's uh that's just it's it's deciding whether or not to compliment or to contradict. That's what it comes down to. That's what it comes to.
SPEAKER_01And I think to go either way, but I honestly think if we had done this with an English, it would be missing, it'd be lacking. I really think that this needed um not only a non-English blend, but like even the arrow man, it needed something extra, like a blend that was extra, which is what this blend is. I think that's that's worked out well. I think it would have been okay the other way. Just we've done it before. This was something unique. And I actually think that this tobacco is wouldn't be easy, it wouldn't go with everything. This is a this is a different tobacco. Yeah, I actually think this tobacco would go really great. Talking about complimenting, I would love to try this alongside uh mellowcorn because for me that's candy corn all day. And then with this on top of it, it'd be like probably an overload. But like if you want like one, like you have a sweet tooth, like real bad, that would probably be like something, you know.
SPEAKER_03Mellowcorn is one that's not on my shelf that I would like to have. I haven't I haven't had Mellowcorn in a while. I mean, we've had it a few times in the you know, for the podcast or the club or whatever else, but it is one that I really enjoy, and it's not in Ohio anymore, so I can't get it. Which is so sad, yeah. But that is it's like a it's a your it's a bottom shelter that I really enjoy.
SPEAKER_04They uh they recently put in for a label for a single barrel pick label for Mellow Corn.
SPEAKER_03Really? Wow, who makes who makes Mellowcorn?
SPEAKER_04Heaven Hill. Yep. So they recently submitted a label for that.
SPEAKER_01That would be interesting. Bottled in bond, it already is. I mean, it's good stuff. I like Mellicorn.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I'm just waiting for them to do J uh JWD and JTS Brown in single barrel. Single barrels, yeah.
SPEAKER_03If they ever do that, we need to get a bottle of each of those for every member of the club. That was our very first bottle, wasn't it? For the club, it's got a sentimental value to everybody in the club. Yeah, yeah. It was Melicorn, JTS Brown, and and uh uh JW Dan.
SPEAKER_01JW Dan, yeah. Those three are the that's like the big three for us. And they're all you know, bargain bit bottles and just great all-around knock around bottles, right? But I think everybody in the club, that's a sentimental. Yeah, those are they're all three. Nobody's gonna turn those down.
SPEAKER_04And it's funny, not everyone likes it, but everyone appreciates it. That's what I mean.
SPEAKER_01Nobody's nobody would turn it down, you know. It's not something people would claw each other
Price Guessing And Label Complaints
SPEAKER_01for, but they had all everybody in the club would be happy to have a pour of one of those. That's awesome.
SPEAKER_04It's pretty, pretty cool.
SPEAKER_03Um, I have a problem with this label.
SPEAKER_04Uh, the fact that it's not straight.
SPEAKER_03No, the fact that it's covering everything up. They got a whole list of facts underneath this label, and I can't see any of it. It's all in great, it's all uh layered over top, and then you throw this site like a classified label almost across the front of it with this lot 40 on. Why'd they even do that? And yeah, it's like this maybe because it's classified. This is cool information, and they're just telling me like information about the about the still, so it's all still in front of us. It's not like you know, uh, it's uh receiver for purified spirits, worm water tank for something connected to wooden pipes with something on top of the word tub. So, like it's all it's it's I don't know if it's a patent, maybe uh is what it is. It could be a patent thing underneath, uh, about how the steel is made. But yeah, it's it's not really related to this particular bottle, I don't think it's just I think it's just like whiskey in general. Um, but so shoot, that's kind of interesting stuff, and it's covered up by this label.
SPEAKER_01I'm not a fan of that uh label being not perpendicular with the bottle as well. Yeah, you know, like this idea. Yeah, it's I do I'm not a caddy corner kind of guy. I just think that looks it looks cheap, and then when the lot 40, I already think trailer park, so it just doesn't do it for me, you know. But the liquid's good, yeah. Yeah, I like it. I do like it. And uh I thought it was wax, but it's not.
SPEAKER_03It's not yep, it has one of those like plastic tops on the cork.
SPEAKER_01It looks like what's underneath the wax on a uh on a uh um oh boy, I just my mind just went completely gone. Um knob creek bottle. Doesn't it, Nick? Yeah, it's the same, it's the same cap if you pull pull all the wax off of it. It's like the same plastic cap. I don't know why that reminds me of knob creek, but it does.
SPEAKER_04I can understand. I mean without the wax. Yeah. Without the wax. It kind of looks like it. It reminds me of that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_04So what would you uh what would you look to pay?
SPEAKER_03Oh, we're still yeah, yeah. Back to that question. For me, it's Canadian, it's 90 proof, so it's not gonna be a lot. Uh and it's it's good, but it's pretty basic. You know, it's nothing it's nothing to write home about necessarily. It's a it's a fairly basic bottle. So I'm really cap out of like 40. I think.
SPEAKER_01I agree. I would pay 40. I think it's probably 60. But I would pay 40. No more than that. There's other Canadians out there that are you know just as good for that price.
SPEAKER_04I'll give you a range, about 35 to 55 for the bottle.
SPEAKER_01So it depends.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah. So you're right in that range.
SPEAKER_04Still right in that wide in that range, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, okay. And I think it's fine for that. And like like when you get to the higher end of that, the 50-55, um, you know, a little bit more hesitant with that, but maybe their cast strength's 60 then.
SPEAKER_04Uh closer to 80. Okay. 80-90. Okay. So, I mean, it's comparable to Alberta premium cast strength. Yeah. Because that one runs anywhere from 80 to 100, depending on where you get it. Yeah, and that was another one that we appreciated, but thought I really liked it. But also, that wasn't Canadian. It was Canadian, it was Canadian Plus. Flavor-wise, it wasn't Canadian, it was it was Canadian plus.
SPEAKER_01I'd have to, I'd have to listen to that podcast. I can't remember. That could be your first one. Huh?
SPEAKER_03That could be your first one, yeah. Right.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I can't remember. That would be my first podcast. Sit down and listen to it. I can't remember what we said. Maybe it was maybe I liked it more than I remember. It's been a long time.
SPEAKER_04I think because we had it for the club, too, and a lot of guys they were not a fan of it because it wasn't Canadian. I think you and I appreciated it because it was Canadian Plus.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that does ring up.
SPEAKER_04It was it was Canadian, but
Aromatics And Warped’s Edge
SPEAKER_04it still had a backbone. It it was, I think that was kind of the start of oh, Canadian whiskey could be something more, it could be it could provide more along the way.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I'd have to revisit that.
SPEAKER_04I will say I was a little concerned about this warped just because I'm not a fan of the warped espresso. Yeah, but I think it might be because I'm just not a fan of warped espresso. Yeah, like this has more warped espresso, is just espresso. There's no there's no other flavors occurring with it, it's just plain Jane. That's what it is. Ryan really likes it, but Ryan also really loves aromatics. Yeah, he does like so. For him, he's like, This is wonderful. For me, I'm like, I it's one and done. Like, there's it's it's this is like a me wanting to take a shot of something, like there's not much to it. Yeah, this has this has more going on with it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I also think aromatics find themselves to be not as as uh the brand doesn't matter as much for aromatics. Like I would assume that maybe any other espresso type aromatic you would get, you wouldn't like. Like it's like the flavors themselves matter a lot.
SPEAKER_01Not that there's a lot of coffee blends out there, but there's right, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03But if you were to try a cherry one and you didn't like it, you probably wouldn't like any cherry one.
SPEAKER_01But you were very against it, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah. But if you did like a cherry one, then you would be able to look at all the cherry ones and be like, this is the best one. So, like warped, I feel like is one of those that would probably be on the the top list of any flavor that they do. But if you don't like that flavor, you're not gonna like it either.
SPEAKER_01Well, and and they don't do flavors that have really been done before because there are some coffee blends out there, but there's none like espresso. You know what I mean? Like that's something different. Um, this one's different, like and warped does a lot of different tobaccos, they're not all aromatic, but um, they are all unique, very unique. Pushing the edge of like it's not normal. Put like they're they're all on on the edge, on the verge of like something like it's more art than tobacco almost, you know.
SPEAKER_04But I also feel like they go a step beyond because I asked you if is it normally just burlies? Because I feel like aromatics are they tend to just be not burlies, uh Cavendish. They tend to just be a mixture of Cavendish, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Burlies and Cavendish.
SPEAKER_04Whereas warped, I feel like yes, there is Cavendish involved, but it's different types, and then it's different things that might be mixed in with that to give you more complexity beyond just here's an aromatic. Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_01I mean, warped uh their blends typically, and this might be one of the more simple ones, typically it's like four or more different components together. Sometimes, sometimes even more. Yeah, warped has some pretty uh intricate blends. They're not like comprised of 75% anything. They're all, you know, lots of little things kind of working together to to make a blend up. If you look at some of their other lineup uh offerings in their lineups, it's some really cool stuff. Yeah. So actually, we probably should get some more for the podcast and talk about them. They do a lot, um, a lot of like for me, like a lot of like fall winter type blends. Yeah, really good. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Which that makes sense. A lot of people only smoke during the fall and winter.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you know, it's it's pipe smoking season.
SPEAKER_03It's yeah, it is this weekend. I think was one of the first times I smoked at home in a long time. And I had a I had a a uh early morning pipe. Uh is that right? Yeah, early morning pipe. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Light English. That's a good one. I mean, early morning pipe is underrated.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah, I love it. So when I first started smoking pipes, I was like, oh, I'll have this one in the morning, and I'll have nightcap at night. Yeah, and I'll just there we go. That's it's right in the name. That's that's what's what your name is doing.
SPEAKER_01Yep, it's in the name. I think a lot of people go through that. Yeah. Uh, there was a time when I was in, I was actually when I was working on uh an ambulance, so I was working night. Uh, and I would get home in the morning, and that's when I would go to bed. But I would have, I would eat breakfast, and then the sun would be like coming up. So I'd sit out on the porch and like wind down, and I would have early morning pipe. Then I'd go upstairs and like sleep in like a blackout curtain room. Um, and then I would have nightcap, like as I started my shift at night. So I I was like sticking true to that kind of a thing. But I do remember like consistently for uh a while, I and I was going through tens of like early morning because it was every morning I'd have that. And it really is, you know, great in the morning. Like it is like one of those things. It's typically I don't do Englishes in the morning, but if you are gonna do one, that one's great. And another good, really good mid-morning blend is Elizabethan, uh Elizabethan mixture. I love Elizabethan mixture. 10 o'clock with some coffee. Oh man, because that one does pack a wallop. Yeah, uh, but that is one hell of a like a nicotine punch kind of thing. Okay, yeah, and it's full flavored, yeah. But yeah, that one does, yeah. I'm a big fan of Elizabethan. Yeah, so good. So so underrated again. Again, underrated. Glad that those blends were brought
Final Thoughts And How To Support
SPEAKER_01back because they are just a staple.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_03All right, gentlemen. This was good. I think this is really good. I mean, there's not much to say because it's just really glass, it was a great tobacco.
SPEAKER_04If I'm gonna get more into tobaccos, I might have to get some Canadian whiskey. There you go. There you go. I might might have to toy around with that.
SPEAKER_01It'll be interesting too to hear your thoughts next time you try this because it will be better, like it'll be ready to smoke better. Like it the moisture content will be better, and and it'll be your second time having it. So that's always interesting when you try new blend. It's the second time around that you really kind of get a clear picture of do I like this? Do I not? What do I appreciate about it? All these things. That'll be interesting to see. Till next time. Till next time.
