Welcome to the Whiskey Chasers, where we talk about our passion for whiskey and its history, either amongst ourselves or while interviewing distilleries. All while enjoying a glass. I'm Steve. I'm Nick, and I'm Chris. Please enjoy responsibly while enjoying this week's episode

Mason Jars For Tobacco Storage

SPEAKER_04

of The Whiskey Chasers.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, so Herm has a tin, uh uh just based on it, a uh So it's a mason jar. I was gonna say canning tin, but okay, so I'm we all know I'm kind of starting to dive into with both feet and into pipe smoking. Yes, welcome to the docs. So I was thinking, so the wife and I were talking about the tins that already have open. I don't smoke enough to go through those before in my mind they go bad. And so I looked at mason jars and then we have a vacuum sealer. And so Mary's like, well, can you can you vacuum seal?

SPEAKER_01

You don't need to go that far.

SPEAKER_02

You don't have to go that far.

SPEAKER_00

You want to actually leave some oxygen in there. Um now, now granted, this is this is an aromatic, so it's not gonna really age like a good Virginia. Um, so basically it came in a bag, right? So I bought it, it was a small batch, came in a bag, um, got it shipped to my house, whatever. Um, and then it was like, I don't want to leave it in a baggie because it's gonna get just gonna dry out. And like a it was like a little, you know, like a little Ziploc baggie that they all ship in. So what I always do is I always put it if I open, I always open a tin or I open the bag and I always smoke some. And then I put it in the mason jar to preserve it. Um, and now some of them obviously will age in the mason jar, but but you introduce oxygen and it's going to get some of that, some of that oxidization, and it's going to age with it's going to age inside of this jar. Now, um, because this has this has a lot of topping to it, or not, I wouldn't say a lot of topping, but it does have quite a bit. Um, and as an aromatic, it has a lot of um, was it propylene glycol? Is that the propylene glycol? Yeah, so that's going to be a preservation. Yeah, it's gonna keep it wet. Okay, it's gonna keep it moist. So it doesn't, it doesn't really age great, but it doesn't dry out either, which is nice. So the idea is I can kind of preserve this for as long as I want and I can smoke on it periodically, or I can if I want to smoke the whole tin, I can do that. It's not a or the whole jar, I can do that. Um, but I think I ordered four ounces of it. So I smoked through quite a bit of it, shared quite a bit of it, and then I stashed some of it.

SPEAKER_02

So even a tobacco tin isn't like vacuum sealed as much as just sealed.

SPEAKER_00

It doesn't matter. It a true tobacco tin is gonna be vacuum sealed. So your tobacco tin, yeah, the tobacco tins are gonna be vacuum sealed. So they are going to age, but it's gonna be aerobic aging. So there's not as much oxygen moisture.

SPEAKER_02

They go in with moisture, which is why so like the ashberry that I have that's like 16 years old. That's not one you want to re-vacuu seal, but put in a mason jar is fine. Yeah, well, no, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Because it's here's the thing once you stop, once you stop, once you pressurize the gases, once this, once it's not allowed like fresh air to come in or air, like gas to escape out, it's going to mature.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Versus like, I don't, like, it's different, like when you put you know alcohol in a bottle and you open it up and you close it. We've talked about that. Does it age in the bottle or oxygen? I don't know.

SPEAKER_00

I don't know. So that's the same kind of concept. So you get sorry, I think I said aerobic. So you're gonna get anaerobic in the tin.

SPEAKER_01

Once you open it and you introduce oxygen to it, you're gonna get aerobic, a starts the aging process every time you seal it again.

SPEAKER_00

Yes. Okay. So basically, you can see it. Which can change the maturity. When you when you the fact that you're introducing it to air and closing it, and there's really trying to like age a tin, let's say I got a my hands on a frogmorn by chance, right? And I was like, I really want to smoke some of this. It's already got some age on it, but I think I want to put like five more years of age on it. What I would do is I would open the tin, I would take a little bit out, and I would pack the rest of it into a mason jar and seal it and put it away and not touch it.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and it would continue to age.

SPEAKER_00

And it would continue to age. However, it does restart that. So it does probably slow that down or, but it may actually speed it up too. It could. It really just depends.

SPEAKER_01

It could I I think once you introduce it to air, you are um changing the concentration of the gases in there. So that is going to less lessen the multiplication that you would get from the aging process.

SPEAKER_00

It might so all the enzymes and things like that, they're gonna use up that that oxygen at some point, as long as you don't so which is why, like when I usually do a jar, I will pack it as tight as I can um to get as much of the oxygen out as I can. I'll I mean I'll leave a little bit, obviously, but um, and then I'll just tight like lock it down and I'll let it let it sit. And like, like you saw the other day, I had a um, I don't remember what it was, a jar of it. I think it was a Virginia of some sort, um, or like a Virginia blend. And I had set it's been sitting for like a year and a half in a mason jar. When I cracked it, I had to actually pry the seal and it and everyone looked at me like Chris, we're like, that's new, right? What did you just crack open? And I was like, this jar. And he's like, You just wasted all that age. And I was like, Well, I want to smoke it. Like, and I'll seal it back and let it sit for another year and try it again.

SPEAKER_01

So I do disagree a little bit with that, what you're saying. And I could be completely wrong, I'm not a scientist, but I actually think that having a good having a good amount of oxygen in there sealed is actually gonna make it age better and faster because the as it transforms that oxygen transforms into the gas and everything else, it's gonna be more it there's more of it to to interact with the tobacco. Yes, you're gonna actually think if you're gonna take a 10 process probably and you split it into two different cans, I actually think you would have more of a significant change over time than you were if you were to pack a whole lot into one. You get what I'm saying?

SPEAKER_00

And I don't I don't put mine into jars necessarily to age, it's more to just preserve it. Yeah, um, and so that's the way that it does age, great. Because I'm going to periodically, I'm gonna revisit it. Right, right. I might not want it for six months and then like because like you know, English blends, right? I'm not gonna smoke an English blend in the summertime, most often, right? I'm gonna go to Virginia, or maybe even like it looks at occasionally a aromatic, but then in the wintertime, like I'm like, or when it starts to get chilly, like there's a little fall chill in the air right now and evening, I'm like, yeah, English is where it's at. And I'll go crack those tins open. And yeah, they've been sitting for six months, eight months, a year in some cut, some cases, maybe longer. Um, I'm gonna smoke some and I'm gonna seal that the jar right back up. And eventually it's going to introduce more oxygen. Where that leaves the aging scientifically, I don't know, but it's probably just gonna keep getting better.

unknown

Right.

SPEAKER_01

For the most part, people are using mason jars not to age tobacco, but to preserve tobacco. Preserve and so that's kind of where I have a different situation going on.

SPEAKER_00

I'll buy two tins, I'll smoke one.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and I'll jar and I'm then every other of what I'm doing here. That's like a gardener that is doing something unconventional. I have a weird

Oxygen, Seals, And Aging Debate

SPEAKER_01

situation with the humidity in this pipe room where I have, and I've been trying to figure it out, I don't know what it is, but I can open up a tin and it gets to the moisture content that I like to smoke at, and it just hangs out there. And at any point, if a if a tobacco goes beyond that, then I'm jarring it or whatever. I haven't really had that issue. It kind of hangs out where I like it. And I like mine at a certain moisture content for smoking. So I haven't needed to jar mine in a long time. I don't know what's going on with this room, as far as that goes. But most people I will say, and and where I used to live at before I put my tobacco in this room, I needed to jar it within like a week. If I didn't jar it, we're talking crispy tobacco, and you don't want it that you do that though, is if you pinch it and it starts breaking, that is not smokable. Uh that I and I like mine on the dryer side, that's not smokable. That it needs to be rehydrated and you're kind of screwed. But what you what you do want is if you pinch it together and it and you let go and it kind of does not stick to your fingers, that's where you want. But it needs to have some bounce, right?

SPEAKER_04

So this room gives you a Dorian Gray sort of situation. This is it, it's it stays at that point. I don't know what's going on with it. Whereas if you go someplace else, then you have more of a mummy or zombie sort of situation.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and even if I put it out there, uh yeah, we're we're in a we're in a bad situation, yeah. Or so with that happy Halloween, happy Halloween. Well, I mean, we're talking age, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

We're spooky, we're talking age. We have a highly aged bottle. We do that we would be drinking.

SPEAKER_04

And we're smoking Sleepy Hollow. Is that right?

unknown

Correct.

SPEAKER_01

Sleepy Hollow, what a blend.

SPEAKER_04

Well, I've never had it.

SPEAKER_01

So it's a very small batch. I just cracked a new bottle. What an experience. We're all gonna we're gonna drink, we're gonna smoke, you're gonna listen. It's gonna be great. It's gonna be fantastic.

SPEAKER_04

Uh this this bottle is found north. It's the peregrine. Peregrine? Peregrine. Uh, like a peregrine falcon. Peregrine. That's our bird involvement.

SPEAKER_00

By the way.

SPEAKER_04

And it is, it is, it is the fastest animal on earth. The peregrine falcon.

SPEAKER_00

Its diving speed is to peregrine falcon's goes like 200 miles an hour.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, it's it's it's an insane speed. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

But here's a bird an animal?

SPEAKER_02

A bird is an animal, yes. Oh, okay. Well, I mean, to Chris's, I'm thinking in Chris's mind, is a fish an animal? It's not. Yes, it is.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, it is. Okay, they all belong in the animal kingdom. It's not a mammal.

SPEAKER_01

That's what you're thinking. That's what I'm thinking of. It's an amphibian, right? An amphibian? Amphibian is land or air. Is it an amphibious? Isn't an amphibian an animal?

SPEAKER_00

Yes. Is that an animal? Yes. A frog's an animal? A frog is an animal. Is a lizard an animal? Yeah. A lizard is typically a reptile. Snake and lizard?

SPEAKER_02

Are they animal? You're thinking reptile.

SPEAKER_00

You're thinking fish. You're thinking is not an animal.

SPEAKER_04

It is.

SPEAKER_00

It's a part of the animal kingdom.

SPEAKER_04

I'm done. If it's not a plant and it's alive, it's an animal. What about humans? Animal animal. We are animals? We are animals.

SPEAKER_00

Homo sapiens.

SPEAKER_04

We are homo sapiens. Animals. We are animals? Yeah, we are animals. I know I was an animal.

SPEAKER_01

I am an animal. Okay. All right. All right. All right.

SPEAKER_00

So look at me, baby. I'm an animal.

SPEAKER_01

So you have plants, animals, and that's it. That's it.

SPEAKER_04

That's that's the extent of live it got. No. Wait, that's fungus. Fungus, yep. Fungus would be a third category. What are trees? Bacteria. Trees are plants. What about Feynman? Feynman? I'm sorry. What is a Feynman? That's a question. I've heard of a Feynman. You have? Fylman?

SPEAKER_01

What is a Feynman? Fileman? I I I think I just tipped my hand that I know more than I'm letting on. But anyway, let's get back to the drinking and the smoking and animals. And this wild vibe. So it is the fastest. It's faster than an ostrich. It is. Okay. Much faster than that. I'm sorry. Faster than an ostrich. Ostriches are faster than shit. You didn't know that? Look it up. Look it up. They are faster than shit itself. Like if shit went out of speed, ostriches beat that.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, no, birds are always gonna be faster than land animals. Cheetah is the fastest land animal. But a peregrine falcon dives at like 200 plus miles an hour. Orcas are fast. Orcas are terrifying. Don't even get me started on orcas.

SPEAKER_01

Great what is the most dangerous animal again? It's not a hippo. Is it a hippo? Oh yeah, they kill more people than anything. I thought somebody said something was was was more dangerous. More dangerous. It's a mosquito for sure.

SPEAKER_00

Oh well, yeah, that's true.

SPEAKER_01

Well, mosquito with with uh the Zika. West now? Remember the Zika? Remember that was a big thing? Remember the Zika?

SPEAKER_00

That was an ideal for a minute.

SPEAKER_02

Got the Zika.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, lately.

SPEAKER_02

Tics are the worst now because they can make you allergic to meat.

SPEAKER_00

I'd rather die.

SPEAKER_02

It'd be sad.

SPEAKER_04

It'd be so sad. So sad. If I if I was allergic to meat, I'd still eat it. I care so much more about ticks than I used to because of that. I mean, like in the past, I have been like I ticks are just a thing. And you're an outdoor guy.

SPEAKER_01

I am. I'm an outdoor, I've gotten many a tick in my life. So I checked myself for ticks the other day. I was in the woods a lot. Yeah. Um, I checked myself for ticks. It makes for a better story. Checked myself for ticks. That's good enough, right? I mean, I wouldn't know. I'm gonna do I don't have long hair. I wouldn't know if I had a tick, right? Okay. That's what I figured.

SPEAKER_00

You're also super white, so that would also be. Wait, does that change things? Ticks are brown, they're gonna be like a brand new big fan.

SPEAKER_01

I thought you were saying ticks were racist for a minute. And I was like, they go after black people, those sons of ticks. I was about to say, like, what? You're kidding me. I literally thought you were like, white people are immune. And I was like, that's some shit right there. You're very white. No wonder people. That's terrible. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Meanwhile, my brother, on the other hand, he is very white, but also extremely hairy, like a bear. And he actually got Lyme disease. Because of the ticket. Because he couldn't find the tick. Because of his hair.

SPEAKER_02

Because he couldn't find the tick.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and he had like a weird rash, and then he got really, really sick, and he called me and I was like, Yeah, dude, you should probably uh get checked for Lyme disease. And he's like, What? And I'm like, You have all the symptoms. And he's like, but I don't I never found a tick on me. I'm like, but you had a the rash that makes sense and you have all of these symptoms. And like he thought he was dying and literally went and he talked to the doctor, and the doctor's like, we're gonna do some blood work. He's like, Why don't you check me for Lyme disease while you're at it? And the doctor's like, Yeah, that's probably a good idea, why not?

SPEAKER_01

And then they're the easy thing to diagnose. My so I had a college roommate who like was a like we'd lift weights and stuff. Like, all of a sudden he started being like kind of a pussy a little bit,

Dialing In Moisture For Smoking

SPEAKER_01

and he was just like, Man, like, I don't feel like working out, I don't feel like doing this, I'm tired all the time. He was just bitching, bitching, bitching. And it was like a year of this. And I'm like, and he tried this, that, and the other. The dude was doing like acupuncture, like all sorts of stuff. Anyway, fast forward like three years after that, like, just couldn't figure it out. Three years after he had Lyme disease, dude had Lyme disease, like from a tick. My brother was like having like heart palpitations, yeah. He was like, he was like fatigued. No wonder I've never felt right. And it's kind of like, man, he never like if he never like kept trying to figure out what it was, he'd probably, I don't know, go admit undiagnosed, undiagnosed.

SPEAKER_00

Like my brother's doctor wouldn't even gonna check him for it. And and I was like, and I was like, just tell him you want you want to run that test too, just throw it in the mix. And sure enough, he had Lyme disease. Like, you saved my life. I'm like, I don't know about that, but I definitely made your life a little better, uh, quicker because you would have been miserable for a long time.

SPEAKER_01

It smells like Sleepy Hollow. The cut's different, a little bit different than I remember, but this is I'm waiting to smoke.

SPEAKER_04

What is Sleepy Hollow? What are we smoking here? What is this?

SPEAKER_00

So this is an aromatic blend. I I tell I I'd like to think of it as what pumpkin spice should be. Okay. So it has a very pumpkin, it's a little bit of a like a uh gin, like not a gingerbread, but like a um like an allspice pumpkin pie. It's very, it's a very fall, October, November blend. Like it is very much your pumpkin spice latte of tobaccos. Now, it is not overpoweringly sweet, um, and it's not like a punch you in the face kind of pumpkin spice. It's it's more subtle, but it definitely has some of that. And the room note on it is incredible, uh, which is why I have not lit my pipe yet, because I am letting gonna let you guys smoke it. And I'm gonna enjoy the room note. And Nick, you're gonna, it's a little wet, so be careful what it is. It is actually so it's very wet, I would say. You just want to smoke it a little bit slower.

SPEAKER_01

Uh pack it a little tighter because it's a little wetter.

SPEAKER_00

A little tighter, a little slower of a smoke, and then don't worry if it goes out because you're gonna just relight it.

SPEAKER_01

I would say so so Sleepy Hollow specifically is a Strauss tobacco blend. Uh they make it in-house, they're the only ones that do it.

SPEAKER_00

And I believe I had to call them to place the order. Yeah, I was doing it online, but I'm not sure.

SPEAKER_01

It's limited every year. They do it every year. It goes very fast too. So it is a pumpkin spice type of Halloween y type of blend. The way that I describe it is it's more nutmeg forward than what you typically get from because like like Sutliff used to do one. Uh Autumn Evening is obviously more, in my opinion, more maple forward. Some you get more pumpkin, but I get more what's interesting about Autumn or uh Sleepy Hollow is you could actually change the name and smoke it in Christmas time and it would still work. Because for me, it's more allspice and nutmeg specifically. But if you were to call this like Christmas custard, you could almost get away with it in Christmas.

SPEAKER_02

This probably go well with this glass. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I'm gonna drink a little bit first, then I'm gonna just on the nose. But uh, it is very, very Halloween when you just just the smell, just smelling it. Like this stuff is potpourri, unsmoked.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, yeah, absolutely. And I just encourage Nick to just just wait a moment, let you guys smoke your pipes for a second.

Halloween Vibes And Bird Talk

SPEAKER_01

Smell this, like not smoked, just smelling it.

SPEAKER_00

The note on this is fantastic, it smells amazing, but burning it smells that's when it's favorite. Once you light it, is when it really starts to smell more. Like you're you think about your cherry blow.

SPEAKER_01

Lane one cue is cook is Christmas cookie or cookie.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, very much a cookie smells like caramel, yeah, like a that kind of like sugary foot.

SPEAKER_01

Like, if you ever want to make your house smell good, you take a little vanilla extract and you throw it in a pan and just put it on low. Have you ever done that? Smells like you're baking cookies. That's what lane one cue smells like.

SPEAKER_00

The room note on this is very much like your pumpkin, like your fall candle.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Oh, fall candle, yeah. But but it's more, it's less pumpkin artificial and more nutmeg in my feelings. Yeah, I totally agree. Yeah, and that's what I say.

SPEAKER_00

It's not punch you in the face, pumpkin. And clove. Yeah, yeah. It's got some spice, the all-spice, clove note that make it really just a pumpkin piece fall and winter blend. It's a fresh baked pumpkin pie.

SPEAKER_02

I do like the smell. I was telling Steve I got the room note like over here, and I was like, whoa, okay.

SPEAKER_00

The room note on this is might be my favorite room note of any tobacco. This is one I could probably sneak and get away with in my house.

SPEAKER_02

I looked for a candle warmer the other day at Meyer, and Mary said, Do you what do you want a candle warmer for? Like for your candles? I said, No, for pipe tobacco. And she's like, What do you mean? I was like, I've done research, like I can put it in like something that can handle the heat, and it won't release it'll heat it up for the smell, like the scent, but no nicotine or anything will come. Kind of like incense. Yep. And I was like, Ah, that that would be great in the basement. And she's like, You're not doing that anywhere else in the house, right? I mean, depends on how much you like it, I guess. Depends on how it turns out. I don't know. It's not smoked spirit.

SPEAKER_01

About it is if you can get away with there's not many aromatics that taste good. Actually, Sleepy Hollow has always been the one that I've thought tasted really good. But if you can get an aromatic that tastes good and smells good, you don't need to do all that. You just smoke it. Your house smells great.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, she told me the other day, I don't mind once a quarter someone smoking in the house for like the club. I just don't know if I want it all the time.

SPEAKER_01

We listen, if we all went over there and smoked lane one Q only, she would love it.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, but I don't know that I want to smoke lane one Q.

SPEAKER_01

You don't. But what I'm saying is, it's not bad. But it's not, it's not look, are you?

SPEAKER_00

Lane one Q has its place, it's not what I'm going to for sure. All the time only. No.

SPEAKER_01

Like, are you gonna limit yourself the Jim Bean White label for the rest of your life? You get what I'm saying? Like, but but I will say it's amazing. I I smoked pipes with a dude, I got him into smoking pipes. He was a cigar guy, he was one of those dudes that like I couldn't give him a hardcore enough tobacco, and he kept wanting more and more and more and more and more. We're actually sitting in this room one night and we're smoking, and I pulled out lane one Q and started smoking, and he goes, Oh my god, what is that? Now that smells amazing. Oh my! And he went on and on and on and on. And I'm like, dude, this is Captain Black, this is lane one Q. And he's like, No, and I'm like, Yeah, dude, this is the tobacco everybody starts out with and just forgets about. Like, but if you were to smell this, this is what pipe smoking is. And for the people not smoking the pipe, if you smoked only that, everybody would like pipe smoking. It's the one that if you're walking around the neighborhood and you're smoking it, people compliment you. Yep. I would agree. Most of the things we like to smoke because it tastes good, don't smell great. They don't smell that great. So people don't do that. Well, that's aromatics in general. But if you walk around with lane one Q specifically and smoke it, everybody loves it. Everybody loves it. You could smoke that in your house and if they smoked that in your house and that's it, your house would smell like good pipe smoke for the rest of its life.

SPEAKER_00

Well, and that's the thing with a good aromatic, is that you're always there chasing. I want the flavor to taste like it smells, and it never does.

SPEAKER_01

Unless there's a few out there. A handful, a handful, only a very few.

SPEAKER_00

And even then, it's probably a little more smelling.

SPEAKER_01

The sun's not even great, but this one has always come close for me. And then uh autumn evening, honestly, is the one that I really say the most. I get the most enjoyment out of it, and it smells great.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I would agree.

SPEAKER_01

But it's it's it's it's a rare yeah.

SPEAKER_00

That's probably one of my favorite aromatics that I've that I've tried. And I'm not a big aromatic guy. Well, I love how well it behaves.

SPEAKER_01

It smokes down to a fine white ash, but it will ghost the hell out of a pipe. Put that in a pipe that you only want to smoke autumn evening in because it is going to smell and taste like pumpkin forever. And maple maple syrup. It's to me, it's uh if you've ever had for you've got you guys have been to first watch, right? They do a seasonal pumpkin pancake. You had it? It's amazing. Pumpkin pancake with butter and maple celery, and that is the taste of autumn eating. It's it's just yeah, it's amazing. Brown sugar and maple syrup. Brown sugar, maple syrup, pumpkin, butter. Throw a little cream cheese on there. That's a that's a pro tip.

SPEAKER_00

Pumpkin or on a pancake? It's a pro tip. I mean, I'm a I'm a Peanut butter on waffle guy, but try try cream cheese. Plain or flavored? Uh cream cheese? I'm a plain guy. I'm not a huge cream cheese guy, period. I do like cheesecake, but I don't like cream cheese. Do you like crepe? No, because like you get the hot cream cheese. Like, I don't that's not my.

SPEAKER_01

I like a good crepe. And I throw cream cheese on there as well. A fun and cooking, a German crepe. A funny kuchen.

SPEAKER_00

Fun and cooken? Fun and cooking, like very cheap. Really thin pancake. Very thin pancake. So you love crepes.

SPEAKER_02

I like crepes. I love crepes.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, I don't mind them. I just not, it's not something I would go to often. I'm not a sweets for breakfast guy, though, a lot of times. That's why I think that's why I like peanut butter on my own.

SPEAKER_01

But I like the sweet savory. So I throw cream cheese on a crepe with some raspberry jam. And that is like sweet, sour, savory. It's got all the things. Salty. It's got all the things.

SPEAKER_04

So we were drinking Found North Peregrine at 20 years old. This is also the 2026 release. Bottled at looks like a just a touch under 120. 119.8, I believe is what it was. 20 years old. And they do a lot of the cognac in this.

SPEAKER_01

It's got to be a good portion. Yeah. Because it's in there.

SPEAKER_04

So it is ultra-aged green whiskey with secondary finishing in cognac and new American oak. I was gonna say it's a little bit more

Ticks, Meat Allergies, And Lyme

SPEAKER_04

bourbon-esque as well.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

And so this one, and this is part of the reason I think that the other one that we had, uh the Helldiver, moved away from cognac because this one became their cognac blend.

SPEAKER_01

And this is a departure from the other one.

SPEAKER_04

Yes, this is different. This is different. And so, yeah, this one is in more cognac. It also has the mash belt in the front. There's more rye in this one than the other one. I think it's 16, maybe 16 or 18. 19. 19. Okay. The other one was only 11, I believe. And so a little bit more rye going on.

SPEAKER_02

I I do like this one a lot.

SPEAKER_04

Do you? Do you like it more than the other one? More than the Hellbender?

SPEAKER_02

Um Rail Diver? Adjacent two.

SPEAKER_03

Okay.

SPEAKER_02

I wouldn't say more than different. Yeah, it's it's it's hard to say that I like this better than that because that one. So this would be possibly the equivalent of Alberta premium cast strength for a Canadian rye. It's got more of a uh more of a it's got more spice and more of a backbone to it than what normal Canadians have. The last one we had still had that Canadian-esque to it. It's not that it didn't have a backbone, but it you could tell like they say sorry a lot. And sorry, sorry. You know, they they they they say lots of things that are Canadian. You're like, you you came from there. This is like, I don't know, this could be like the third or fourth cousin to a Canadian.

SPEAKER_00

This is definitely more of a departure. This is a Minnesotan, yeah. This is a Minnesotan. It's got a little more punch, it almost drinks more proofy than the other bottle, even though it's a lower proof, I think. Um, it definitely I feel like it drinks a little higher proof.

SPEAKER_05

Um it's like because and I think that's probably because of the rye.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it's a D gen. Remember D Gen? D Gen's from up north. Yep. I what's interesting is on the nose, it's so much more cognac, and it's sweeter, but on the taste, I'm not getting a ton of cognac.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, no, the sweetness is almost it's bittersweet. Yeah, it's it's I mean, there is a sweetness there, but it also has uh more proofy notes to it, and that could be the rye. So there's a lot of spice to this one. There is a lot of spice to this one, but the spice it it's more, it's it's rye.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah, yeah. But this is rye. But it's coming across as proof, which is normally the other way around. But this is coming across as proof to me. It's less because it's less baking spice. I think it's because it's it's that's the cognac is cutting back on the spice, but it's there, so it's like instead of hiding it, it's just showing up as proof to me.

SPEAKER_00

Almost like it doesn't linger like a like a traditional rye spice.

SPEAKER_01

To be honest, yeah. Uh, it it's more this is more. If you were gonna care, can compare this to the other one. This is the um rough, this the rougher, less polished younger brother. It's much less friendly, right? This dude, that the this guy doesn't shave and and he's and he's hardcore and he gets into bare knuckle fights compared to the other guy. Yeah, showers once a week versus every day. Yeah, well, and and I like that. I it's this is a winner whiskey, but it's different, and it's not what I expect. I expected it to be other way, the other way around.

SPEAKER_00

If you live in Canada, this is gonna keep you warm. Yeah, dude.

SPEAKER_01

This is probably not what you're grabbing at the same time. That's fair, yeah. Dude, this is a really wet, cold night in Canada that you want to come in and warm up. Yeah, I mean, and and the thing is, this has hit my chest and not let go.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

It's just lingering right in the sternum.

SPEAKER_00

Doesn't have a long finish in terms of flavor, but it definitely has a lot of that heat. Comes back up, yeah. Yeah, in a good way. It's so interesting.

SPEAKER_01

In a wet different way, in a wet cottage sort of way.

SPEAKER_04

So I had a theory that this was a tobacco problem. This is a pairing problem, I think. You think it's a pairing problem? Yeah. So I just lit up our last one and tried it again. It cuts away a lot of that, those rough edges. So it's the sleepy hollow thing that the effect weak. It's the sweetness of it and the the aromaticness of it that is take that is making the alcohol uh spicier than it actually is.

SPEAKER_01

That's interesting because it's spicy as shit.

SPEAKER_04

It's very spicy. But I like it, but I like it. I'm not saying I don't like it. If you switch to your old tobacco, okay, that those sharp edges goes away, they're completely gone.

SPEAKER_01

So is it a problem or is it a good thing?

SPEAKER_04

That's up to you.

SPEAKER_01

I don't know. I mean, you've had it both ways.

SPEAKER_04

Which way do you like it? I've had it both ways. I the spiciness is too spicy for me. Too much. Okay. For for me. But I'm not as big of a rye guy as you guys are. So that rye spicy might be a good thing for you.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, I so I've only I've only just lit my pipe, and so I just did my char light and I haven't kind of revisited it yet. And I still think it's like it by itself, it's very it's still very spicy. Okay. So maybe that other tobacco cuts tobacco cuts it down. That would make sense because it's creamish, it's a lot more creamy, yeah, heavy, heavy, thick smoke, gonna kind of coat your mouth.

SPEAKER_01

I will say just on a side note, that it's been a while since I've had sleepy hollow, and god, I remember why and how much I like I like this stuff. This stuff is good.

SPEAKER_02

Like the flavor is not a normal air matter. I really want to try some other.

SPEAKER_00

I would love to go visit

Sleepy Hollow Blend Breakdown

SPEAKER_00

Strauss when we're in Kentucky. I'm telling you, it's gonna be.

SPEAKER_01

We have to go. I would like to. Florence, y'all.

SPEAKER_04

So that's not that far.

SPEAKER_00

No, it's on the way down. I don't know where Florence. It's like two hours. It's on the way down. It's not that all the way down. No, it's on the way down, it's like an hour from Cincinnati. An hour from Cincinnati. On the way down. Yeah, let's do that. Yeah, well, more than we need to we need to make a pit stop. What is it with the songs? You know all these songs. I think it's this is Tism is showing. It's like my wife's brain works in music. She's got the TISM. It's funny. I I totally do have this.

SPEAKER_01

We all have a little bit. We have a little bit. We all have a little bit.

SPEAKER_00

Steve likes numbers. He's a big fan of numbers.

SPEAKER_01

It's it's just I have a memory for bottles. If you look this good and have it, that's a good idiot. Most of the time, you don't look this good and have the tism. So I gotta win-win. But you got that lazy eye, so it doesn't help.

SPEAKER_02

Who does? So they're they're you believe is this the first time they've done the paragraphine? Is it paragraph?

SPEAKER_01

Paradigm was something we had a while back.

SPEAKER_00

Because you said they've done it before. Yeah, okay.

SPEAKER_04

Not our first time.

SPEAKER_00

This is not their first rodeo with the peregrine.

SPEAKER_04

Um similar, similar years. They actually skipped a year. So they did 23, 24, and then 26. So they skipped 25 for it. Uh all of them are a heavy cognac finish. So all the peregrines are staying uniform. Are cognac. The proof point is different. They're either 20 or 21 year. The 24 is the 2024 is a 21-year-old. The other ones are 20 years old. But they've all had they've all been cognac. So the 24 and 25 of the Helldiver also had cognac in it. So I think that they cut the cognac off in order to highlight it in this. To kind of make the two separate, to kind of draw a line between the two.

SPEAKER_02

Because this one still has the new American oak.

SPEAKER_04

Yes.

SPEAKER_02

So Armagnac, cognac, new American oak.

SPEAKER_01

It's good. I like it. It's a um different iteration. I appreciate it for what it is. What's interesting is if you were to ask me between the two which one I like more, it's the other one. Oh, sorry. And I'll tell you why. Because it's more Canadian.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

This is even less Canadian than the other one. But that being said, it is Halloween, and it's a Halloween episode. I would like to talk a little bit about Halloween.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. I wonder if it versus my one little random bag just to get us off into that going into it.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. So I don't know. I mean, we didn't really talk about this, but does anybody have any Halloween stories they want to talk about? I don't know. Something. Something Halloween-y. I love Halloween. It's my favorite time of year. Did your family ever grow up with like we didn't, and that's why I love it. I love it. We so we did Halloween when I was younger. Uh, and then we when I got set six, seven, eight, nine, something like that, somewhere around that time. We that's when we actually converted. And when we converted, it was it was a bit in a big way. My dad went from like not knowing anything about church or going to church to going to church and learning about church and being like a teetotaler. So like I remember he came home and was like, if it's not rated G, we got rid of it. If it's not, you know, so like a little too much, a little too much. So we spent from then on, we spent Halloweens inside, lights off, doors locked, not participating, not participating. Yeah. So as I got older, this like um I romanticized a little bit Halloween. And uh, you know, once I I was like, you know, I was like a kid and I was like, if I ever have a family, I'm totally doing Halloween. So that's why we do, you guys know I do Halloween in a big way. Like I'm a big it's my favorite time of year. It's my favorite. I'm already trying to figure out what bottle I'm gonna bring. Yeah, like it's a big deal. So I, you know, and and since then my family has chilled out a little bit, you know what I mean? But uh there was years that we went by where we I didn't trick or treat or nothing, none of that stuff. So I do love Halloween. Uh so if that answers your question. Did you guys ever do like fall festivals at church during Halloween? They dude, I went, I grew up in a very um conservative where nothing was a legalistic, like, yeah, no, no, we didn't. They uh you did not even talk about Harry Potter because I was of the devil, right? And now I'm a big Harry Potter fan. I'm a fanatic, you know what I mean? I've read all the books, like it's not what it was. I was told it was something growing up. It's not that, it's just not so um, yeah. So I I grew up in that kind of a way. We didn't do fall fests, we didn't do trick or treat, we didn't dress up, we didn't do none of it. So I I I appreciate the hell out of it now. I love it. The kids dress up, we do trick or treat. Oh, yeah. I've already been told that we're dressing up.

SPEAKER_02

I don't I don't know what, but Hudson already told Mary what we're dressing up as something else.

SPEAKER_01

So, I mean, honestly, all my best Halloween memories and stories would be from Since I've Had Kids, which is interesting.

SPEAKER_04

See, mine are all from when I was not really young, but like teen years. So I was really, really young. We didn't do too much with it. Our town was too small, we didn't really do anything. We went to grandma's house, grandma passed out candy because she lived in town, and then we'd go around and go around that town. So we didn't know anybody there or anything, so it's not like we were running into people we knew. But later on, our church decided to do uh like a a Halloween sort of thing or Halloween fall festival sort of deal, and they chose they did it at our house because we had the woods and we had a a path that we could take and everything else.

SPEAKER_01

You said your house was kind of spooky too growing up, it was so yeah.

SPEAKER_04

The house was kind of spooky, but they stayed across the road in the barn. So we had uh we have an old, like wooden kind of stereotypical old wooden barn. We also have a foundation to a bank barn, so those old barns that were on a hill, yeah, and the barn itself is gone, and we just had a roof on it now, but the this concrete underneath area is still there, and it was just full of junk. And we had a couple of old cars and stuff like that back there. So we had the old barn that we had, like the the bobbing for apples in and all that kind of stuff. Then they did a haunted trail ride back through the woods with the hay, like a hay ride. Like a hay ride, and that would go by the old car that was back there, and there was people inside of it that would pop out. Speed would come around in the chain with the chainsaws without the chains on them and scare you and all this stuff. It was just really, really cool, that kind of stuff. Fun kind of deal. When you're a little older, yeah, when you're a little scared, yeah, exactly. Be in your bed, yeah. Yep, and then we had another old barn back there that they had wired up the door so that when you open the door, uh a dummy would come out of a casket and pop up and everything. So it's just really cool kind of deal. And we did it for probably six or seven years, and then the pastor of our church changed and and and they decided uh Halloween was a little bit more devilish than they liked. See, and then it ruins it, and then they we they cut it off. We stopped doing it after that. They switched all their resources to our journey to Bethlehem, our live nativity, and so they switched everything Christmas is a big deal, Halloween, not so much, exactly. Yep, and Easter, forget about it, forget about it. So uh, don't get me wrong, I got lots of great memories of journey to Bethlehem. I was one of the three wisecrackers, it was a great time. Wisecrackers, wisecrackers, they turned us into comedy routines, it was fantastic. I'm not murder, hey uh that's right, but uh but the the Halloween thing was really goal. I brought bacon, right? It made me feel special because I was at our at our house and everything, and so just a lot of good memories of that. Since then, you know, Halloween's just a random thing that happens. I like to sit out and give out candy on Halloween. You don't do anything special? No, we we give up.

SPEAKER_01

You should think something pass that can candy, dude.

SPEAKER_02

Come over here, we'll we'll we'll drink.

SPEAKER_01

We do a sh we do a uh an adult shot stand and a big deal.

SPEAKER_04

Why don't you I just join in for the shots? Yeah, you know, I I do it at our house because I like giving our candy and and seeing like the neighborhood. Our neighborhood is your neighborhood into it. So like the the people around us are real big into it. Like you could almost do like a Christmas night sort of thing through our neighborhood

Found North Peregrine Tasting Notes

SPEAKER_04

for Halloween. So that's how my neighborhood is.

SPEAKER_01

So our neighborhood, they come every year. They're like, we've there's people that are like, we moved away three years ago and we still come back because this is the bourbon house, you know. So like we uh it's very you know family neighborhood oriented, so you're always welcome.

SPEAKER_05

Of course, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Same thing, Herm. Yeah, I I love it. I I love people to come over. We dress up every year, we hand out candy.

SPEAKER_02

I sit with Bob in the garage.

SPEAKER_00

Our neighborhood's kind of like out a little bit out in the country. Um, and so there's not a lot around us. Um, so it's like we have mean it's a big neighborhood, very big neighborhood, tons of kids. Um, and I think a lot of the kids that live out kind of in the outskirts a little bit, they all come to our neighborhood. So our like Halloween in our neighborhood is crazy.

SPEAKER_01

It's it's it's popular.

SPEAKER_00

It's I mean, you're talking about I'm talking about thousands of kids. Yeah, I mean, we will you will run out of candy in like 20 minutes.

SPEAKER_01

That sucks. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, it's like you've got to stock up to portion it out. You're like, one candy, one candy for you, because I can't spend 150. But there's people in our neighborhood that have DJs, and like Steve was saying much. There's some of them that have like full-blown, like haunted houses. Um, I mean, with fog and stuff coming out of their house and stuff coming out of the ground. And um, and then we look, we we don't do all that. We do, you know, we do the pumpkin carving and we just kind of sit out and but I love setting up the fire pit and like hanging out. We'll walk our kids around and they usually get tired after like an hour, and we're like, all right, cool, we'll just hang out. My kids will end up handing out candy and I'll just end up sitting around the fire pit.

SPEAKER_01

It's been raining, dude. And cold the weather's been terrible the last seven years.

SPEAKER_00

Like the last three years in a row. Like, what the heck? So we have it's almost like you have to have the fire pit to stay like alive when you're handing out candy, but but we do that, and um, like I for me, like Halloween was never really a big deal. Um, I grew up in a smaller neighborhood where it was like kind of our street, and that was pretty much it. And we went up and down our street, and it was all of my friends that I went to school with, and so it was kind of cool. And I feel like I dressed up as like a vampire for like five straight.

SPEAKER_01

I was gonna ask, what did you dress up as?

SPEAKER_00

I feel like uh yeah, I was a I feel like I was a vampire for my for my more formidable years, like my you know, third through like seventh grade, and then it was kind of like well, you know. I feel like now you could get away with Fester from yeah, I'm a little too tall for Fester, more of a Herman Munster kind of Herman Munster, yeah. Or like a uh J. I mean make a good Jason. I'm thinking a Jason.

unknown

Yes.

SPEAKER_00

My son wants to go as Michael Myers, he's like obsessed with Michael Myers, so he's six, which is wild.

SPEAKER_01

That's a that's a little creepy for a six-year-old. Yeah, that's pretty wild.

SPEAKER_00

Like give him a knife, like yeah. Hudson's like that's the age he did. He's gotta be this, and I'm like, dude, that's Michael Myers. Yeah, that is. He's like, Yeah, he's like and that's the age he did it. Okay, yeah, a little bit, yeah. That's okay. All right.

SPEAKER_02

Apparently, Hudson said I need to go as Haggard. Hagrid? Hagrid, Hagrid, Hagrid, Hagrid.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, because the beard they want us to do Harry Potter. They want us to do Harry Potter this year. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_04

You're not big enough to be Hagrid.

SPEAKER_01

That's what I thought, but it's the beard. We could do it.

SPEAKER_00

We'd have to get like a gray beard and Dumbledore. Maybe.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, here I will say, if we were gonna go as Harry Potter characters, is there anybody better than Hagrid for Nick to go as?

SPEAKER_00

Dumbledore, maybe.

unknown

I'd have to.

SPEAKER_01

Well, we were gonna put Bob as Dumbledore.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, that's fair. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Which kind of makes sense when you think about it. But I will say, I don't know.

SPEAKER_00

But Nick Neville, Neville Longbottom, make him shave his face and send him as Neville Longbottom.

SPEAKER_01

So, Nick, I could go as a little let's talk about your childhood Halloween experience. Nothing. You were you're like me? Were you anti uh you also lived in the country?

SPEAKER_02

There we go. No, Amish, it was against Amish, and we lived around Amish miles to get to a one house to trick or trees. So we lived around Amish and Conservative Midnight. Both of them are against the five. Did you do something at church?

SPEAKER_01

Did you you had to do something, right?

SPEAKER_02

The Wednesday before we would have like a fall fest, and it used to be really big, but no costumes, no no, no costumes. There was like bobbin for apples, there was the dunk tank, there was like a hairundine. There was I mean, like they would hand out candy, but like it wasn't a trick-or-treat kind of thing. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Um the the church, as we got bigger, the elders kind of put a kibosh on that because they were like, oh, we're that's getting too.

SPEAKER_01

So you didn't have a traditional Halloween grown up. Like, if you're like me, I'm surprised you're not more into it.

SPEAKER_02

I don't we never dressed up. That's what my he was like, why don't you dress up? I was like, I never what do you mean? I never dressed up as a kid. I didn't know that it was in the world.

SPEAKER_01

Because you weren't in a neighborhood.

SPEAKER_02

We were in a neighborhood where there were people doing it, knocking on our door, and we were like cornfields started doing it. We we did not have the neighborhood for it. Yeah, I mean, you know where I grew up.

SPEAKER_01

Well, yeah, you were out in the you were rural, you are rural, and I grew up in some rural parts, but Mary and Laura didn't know what rural was.

SPEAKER_02

They were like, so Steve and Chris have been to my the house I grew up in, but what you guys visited at that point, there was more neighbors or more homes on that road than what I grew up with. Yeah, now, yeah. Now so like I grew up with cornfields off to my left, right, front, and back. I that's all it was was cornfields. And then now we've got like I think my parents have two neighbors next to them, and that's we had a pond, a neighbor on the corner that had put on.

SPEAKER_01

Did you do anything at school? No, not really, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I mean, never did you even carve like pumpkins as a kid? No. The first time I ever carved a pumpkin was at Mary's house.

SPEAKER_01

So you're very similar to the way I grew up, but that's why I I love the hell out of it. But also, I like spooky stuff. And so, like when uh I don't know that I dislike or don't read. Like, I was I watched so many. You remember that when it was a baby? As a baby, yes. I watched every horror movie and every B and C horror movie you can think of. I watched them all. I I dude, I was off for that whole month of October and I watched like seven or eight movies a day. Kid you not, for like a month. It was awesome. I've seen ever I've seen every uh like sorority house. I like like they had from the 70s, they had like a like a like a horror, like a series of like these sorority girls that get killed. It's very B like horror movie. I've seen them all. I've seen every horror movie you can think of. There's so many out there. But I will say that I had there's a caveat to it. I like I like the slashers, the Jasons, the the Halloween, the the Friday the 13th, that kind of stuff. I don't like when it gets anything into like the demon aspect, or if it's too gory, that's where I I cut the like I call it. If it's deep if it's demonic, no thing. Spiritual warfare, I don't like it. And then also like I started watching, what was it?

SPEAKER_00

Um I like it when it's like comical gore. It's like so ridiculous to a degree. Yeah. You're like, what is happening right now? Like, just run away.

SPEAKER_01

And like, oh no, what's the series where it's uh so stupid, but it's funny, and then I find it the guy with the oh Hellraiser. I tried to watch the first one, I was like, I don't know. The second one I stopped and was like, this is not for me. Like those, so those movies, the Hellraiser movies, not for me. Too gory. But I do love it when it's like very cheesy, there's some sort of slasher thing going on. Like, yeah, the cheesy, the cheesy screen, dude. I'm I'm all about it. It's like the saw and the shining. Yeah, not oh, I love the shining. Uh dude, I love the shining. I've loved shining a million times. The shine shiny's not so scary, it's spooky as hell. Like, yeah, but I'm also a Stephen King fanatic. So, but yeah, but but when it gets into like, like, I don't like um what's that one? Paranormal activity. Well, that yeah, that one, and then the uh the the conjuring exorcist. Screw that, yeah. I'm not a big fan. Uh, but but I do like uh, you know, slashers and and Stephen King type novels and or uh novel adaptions and things like that. But I am a big so uh you know it's almost yeah, I mean Halloween, it's coming up. So I've been you know just binge like uh the whole month uh as just as much as horror, like classic horror, like 70s, 80s horrors that I can get it.

SPEAKER_04

Question because you guys grew up in places where you couldn't watch those things, yeah. Yeah, what is the best fall movie that's not Halloween? Because like I have a student in my class that's Jehovah's Witness, so therefore I can't show any kind of a Halloween movie or anything, but it's gonna be a falling. But what is a good fall titan, but not Halloween, but not Halloween? Yeah, I remember I I would I didn't, you know, what are the Titans?

SPEAKER_01

What is it? What is a hollow, what is a fall Halloween like movie that's not Halloween?

SPEAKER_04

I'd yeah, I mean that like the way the way the parents described it to me is that pumpkins are okay, jacklanders are not, and so it's

Pairing Whiskey With Aromatic Tobacco

SPEAKER_04

like that. So that's kind of where your line is because Jack is a good thing.

SPEAKER_01

You can't watch peanuts, like for the love of the Lord.

SPEAKER_04

I know that's that's what I'm thinking. Is you have to do like a like a a Hallmark. You could do like a football movie, like I think fall football movies.

SPEAKER_02

Kinda, but it's octopus.

SPEAKER_03

What kid wants to watch that? It's it's uh it's playoff baseball, so you can do some do some baseball movies.

SPEAKER_01

Oh man, let me think. For uh Feel the Dreams second. I love Feel the Dreams, not Halloween, not even not even fall. Uh man, that is a tough question.

SPEAKER_00

Anything with fall always centers. It always goes to the hall.

SPEAKER_01

I don't know what their rules are, but what here I got an idea. Jumanji, the original, the original Jumanji, because it's a little scary, it's a little suspense, it's got some fall aspects as they're running around outside. That would be one. Jumanji is maybe. Uh book that they made into a movie. I think uh Disney did it. Um, and it's based on the book. It's not Halloween, but it's based in fall, it's spooky. Yeah, it's a it's a tale about you know loving what you have, not wanting what you what you want, kind of a thing. Being content. That's what it's really about. That would be a good one. Uh, a little bit for older kids. Also, again, I'm not sure how what they can watch. I don't know. I mean, that's literally the devil coming and giving you an option and you saying yes or no.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, whatever movie I come up with, something wicked this way comes.

SPEAKER_01

By the way, if you're listening and you're into that stuff, it's good. And also read read the book, Ray Bradbury, so good. Also, the Halloween tree, fantastic. But I would recommend those two. I don't know. I'd it's tough to say fall without showing some sort of a Halloween.

SPEAKER_04

Right. I mean, we're gonna have the same problem come Christmas time. The October Sky would be a good one. October Sky is a good one.

SPEAKER_01

October sky just because the name of it, October, but it's about rockets in it.

SPEAKER_00

Set in the fall in West Virginia, they're doing the Rockets, like that would be a good one. That's really the only one I can think of. Dude, the great pumpkin Charlie Brown is super Halloween, but that is it.

SPEAKER_01

You know, I mean Halloween Town from Disney. You remember that one? Uh, there's a lot of good ones, yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, and so I mean, like I said, I'm gonna have the same problem come Christmas time. There's a few more winter movies, but not very many of them. And so Frosty the Snowman. I think maybe I I have to rewatch it to know.

SPEAKER_01

Santa Claus is in it, he's totally in it towards the end, and he actually saves Frosty a little bit.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, that's right. Yeah, just show him diehard.

SPEAKER_01

That's a great just a perfect diehard would be fantastic, except for the killing. Yeah, I don't think the Jehovah's Witnesses are okay with that.

SPEAKER_04

I think I I think I would be, I would think I'd be allowed to show if but it's killing's fine, but not channels. Yes, killing is okay. I'm not gonna judge, we're not here to judge. So I I think I'm I'm limited to PG. So no PG 13. I don't think Yippie Kaye mother. Yeah, I don't really qualify. I'm not sure. I can make that one.

SPEAKER_02

Maybe back in that day, maybe back then, yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Um I was curious if you thought of anything, if you had anything in your head, because I don't think actually home alone would be fine.

SPEAKER_01

Home bound because they don't exactly have homeward bound is kind of a focalish set.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, I don't think I don't really think Santa Claus is a huge no haunting, there's like especially Home Alone 2, yeah, which is also a boss, right? Right. Uh like there's a Christmas tree in it, but it's not like it's there, it's not like a best there, obviously. Yeah, and I think and the the family's pretty understanding. I think I can get away with some of that kind of stuff.

SPEAKER_01

I didn't know that they were anti anti hollow like holidays, yeah. No holidays. So I know they don't meet on Easter because the church behind our house is Easter, it's a desolation.

SPEAKER_04

They were very they were very kind and explained stuff to me. They they said that they don't celebrate they don't celebrate holidays or or birthdays or anything like that because those are are godly things. Those those are from God, not from anything that you earned or did. So therefore, we don't celebrate those because those are not you, it's not a it's not an accomplishment. Now, graduation, huge. They love graduation. That's a big deal. Yeah, because are weddings, things like that, because that is something that you accomplished in your life, but it's not like a pagan holiday, which is what all this stuff is.

SPEAKER_02

No, they don't. I knew I knew that. Yep. I had a friend that grew over.

SPEAKER_00

A kid can't have like a birthday party.

SPEAKER_04

No, yeah, no birthday party. He also does not stand for the national anthem because you don't, we we don't, we're not we're not celebrating the country. We're God is above the country.

SPEAKER_01

I went to a Jehovah's Witness church one time, uh, and I did a presentation on it in college. They are different, though very different than uh I'd be fascinated in going to one just to explain. It's interesting. Yeah, it's very uh I I could tell you my experience, but it it was very interesting. But I did not know

Childhood Halloween And Church Rules

SPEAKER_01

that about the holidays. I do remember the birthdays that they don't celebrate birthdays. If you're 12, get over it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, but it's interesting. I feel like that's not really a good idea.

SPEAKER_01

I didn't I don't remember that about the holidays being like I know they didn't like celebrate it, but I just figured that they could like watch movies and stuff, but I but I don't know, maybe not.

SPEAKER_04

So if it's about the holidays, that's gotta be tough.

SPEAKER_01

If you are a Jehovah's Witness and you're assimilated into like an actual school system, that's gotta be tough to separate yourself from that stuff.

SPEAKER_04

This kid is in sixth grade, yeah, and he does very well with it. And the family is very understanding. They were like, when we when we did this, they were like, you know, it's gonna happen at some point, like you're gonna he's gonna experience a birthday party at some like or like a celebration of that. Like, and it just like but he's not showing up to school in a costume, no, no, and they treat it as a learning opportunity for him, but he's very aware of it, and he's very good at defending it. So, like, I didn't know any of this on the first day of school, and the first day of school, you know, we stand up for the for the pledge of allegiance, and he didn't stand up for it, and so I just like asked him, I was like, Steve's over there strangling him.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, I'm I'm cool. Strangler, you do you, I don't care. That's why I'm not a teacher, because I'd be like, I don't care what you believe in. This is what it is in America. You stained your ass. Oh, but like I asked him, I was like, hey, you didn't stand.

SPEAKER_04

He was like, Yeah, I don't stand for that. Yeah, it's like okay, and then and then I got to stand for that. Yeah, and so and then parents sent me the email later on. That's like, oh, okay, so that's what that is. But like he was very good about like saying that, yeah, that's not something I do. So if any of you guys know out there a fall movie for me, yeah, I would approach it. Point back to that. Yeah, fall movie, a non-holiday, yeah, a non-holiday fall odd autumn would be the movie. Yeah, autumn movie. Exactly. An autumn movie. Uh, that would I would greatly help me because I like to watch no Halloween on that topic.

SPEAKER_00

I like to watch movies. What's okay? Let's go with our what's your favorite Halloween movie?

SPEAKER_01

Oh gosh, that is tough.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, boy, that is tough. See, I'm not a horror movie guy. Doesn't have to be a horror movie. I don't really like horror stuff, so because of that, mine goes kind of kiddish. And and I think it might be uh hocus pocus. Yeah, I was gonna say I love Hocus Pocus.

SPEAKER_01

I did watch classic hocus growing up because we did get to watch, so we did have, you know, going back to we didn't really do a whole lot of Halloween stuff, but we did have the ABC family. Remember this? Yeah, like 31 days of Halloween and 25 days of Christmas. So I did watch movies. Um, and hocus pocus, I think would probably be for me being a 90s guy.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, you know, born in the late 80s, it's home, it's the home alone quintessential Halloween movie for me.

SPEAKER_01

That's it. I mean, I don't think it gets any better. Like you think of Christmas, you're like home alone. Yeah, that's like that's good for no matter what age you are, it's home alone's a great one. That's a good point. I think home alone is up there with the Santa Claus. Yeah, Santa Claus is a close segment. I think the 90s just did the 90s, but uh dude, Hocus Pocus, yes. Uh also, also Sleepy Hollow, the cartoon with Ben Crosby narrating. I don't know that I've ever seen that. Oh my Steve, oh my gosh. You have not?

SPEAKER_00

No, I don't think I don't think I have either.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, you're kidding me. Sleepy hollow. You're kidding, Nick. Oh, this is mind blowing. My mind is blown. My mind is blown.

SPEAKER_04

So a Ben Crosby. Ichabod Crane. Okay. Oh, wait. Are you talking about Ichabod, like just the Disney Ichabod? Ichabod Crane with with with talking about Sleepy Hollow. Yes. Okay, I have seen that.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, you have to Ben Crosby sings and narrates Ichabod Crane. You had to have seen that. And he's literally it's the it's the story of Sleepy Hollow, head of the horse, head of the horseman, Ichabod Crane. If you watch the actual version, it's got Toad Hall.

SPEAKER_04

And then it goes to Ichabod. Okay, Steve, yes, you know.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, I was about to say, my mind is blowing right now if you didn't see that.

SPEAKER_04

There's a crazy story about that DVD. I bought that DVD when I was in college. Did you watch it growing up though? Or not? I had never seen the whole thing. The only reason I knew about it was that Mr. Toad realizing that the vehicles were a thing, yeah, and it's very exciting. Was very excited, was a clip from like Disney trivia, yeah, like the DVD Disney trivia game. Yeah, so like that's what I saw was just that clip, and I was like, this is really cool. I want to see this movie. And I never and I could never find it, and I could never find the DVD. So I was in college and I went with a friend of mine to to the mall in Lancaster, Ohio. I was I was I was in college down at hawking, so Southern is down there, and uh I went there, I was with my girlfriend and my roommate and somebody else, and uh I found this movie, and I was like, I gotta get that. I was in it was like an FYE, I think is where I bound it. Oh yeah, and my girlfriend slit like picked open the the can the box and took out the DVD and resealed it. So I didn't know that it was gone, and I got back to the dorm room to watch it. Like it is a prank open, and I opened it and the DVD wasn't there. I thought I would just bought an empty case and then just like a hardcore. She must have been hardcore.

SPEAKER_00

So somebody stole a lot of stuff.

SPEAKER_04

So uh Steve's innocence. Sounds like, god damn it, and so I like I I called them all, and this is like an hour away, so it's not like I could just turn it on. Oh, she didn't tell me about it for like two days. Wow, she was brutal. Yeah, that's not gonna say there's a word for that. Yeah, she is not my current wife. Yeah, no, yeah, I would say not.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, who who did she go on to dormant? She sounds like a good time in the moment for cry a good time in the moment, not so great the next day.

SPEAKER_04

So it was like two days later.

Best Fall Movies Without Halloween

SPEAKER_04

Now she finally wow, finally gave me a little bit.

SPEAKER_01

She's like, you know that movie you bought, I got the F in DVD. Yeah, it's like thanks a lot.

SPEAKER_04

That was our date night that weekend. Yeah, how well how about she just didn't want you to watch the movie? Exactly. Yeah, so uh, so that was the first time I watched it, and I and I still have it, and I and I love it. The the Ichabod Crane part of it is very good.

SPEAKER_01

So Toad uh when he decides when he learns about the vehicles and he gets very excited. That whole actually, that whole character, that would be like me if I won the lottery. Yeah, do you see it? Like it's that's too. He's just like from one thing to the next and very gets very hyper-focused and hyperfixated and excited about things, and then as soon as he's done, he's moving on, like on to the next thing. Every time I watch that, I'm like, ugh, that's I'm I'm identifying way too much with that guy.

SPEAKER_04

Even Laura was like, Yeah, I don't think I realized that was been Crosby.

SPEAKER_01

Narrative 100% watch it again. You're right. It's totally, and and the music actually is great in that's great. Yeah, I grew up watching that. Yeah, I grew up. There's a few other things uh I could say like I grew up watching, but the you nobody would get it. But I would say hocus poke is for me is probably and I would say anybody in our generation would agree. Yeah, yeah, that's pretty much a quintessential peanuts. Peanuts, like peanuts, the gray pumpkin, Charlie Brown. Uh Halloween Town is another one on Disney. That was another big, big one. Uh, I was a little bit older, but that was another one. That was a big one. Uh honestly, though, uh, Goosebumps. Yeah, the show.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, any kind of spooky show.

SPEAKER_01

Goosebumps and Are You Afraid of the Dark? That was another Nickelodeon thing that it was very Halloween-ish. And was that like a Friday night? Like, it was like late night Friday night. That was another good one, yeah. Do you remember that um uh show Beyond Belief Fact or Fiction?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

With Jason Friggs, it was kind of like the precursor to like place believe it or not. Yeah, I love that freaking show. Uh, that one in Unsolved Mysteries. God, that's it's like Halloween every time you watch it. It's so creepy, but I love the old one. I I grew up on that show, dude. Freaking would watch that all the time. Update. Like, oh my god, there's an update. So, Nick, you have no Halloween movies. So you had nothing, nothing weird. Uh Halloween.

SPEAKER_04

You guys weren't movie people either, though, were you?

SPEAKER_02

My dad was, but really weird movie. Like, what'd you guys watch? Off the wall. Like off the wall, as far as like random. I like this versus that. Like it's it's never, it was never like I like this genre. Were you guys like an air bud kind of family? No, like he was a Jimmy Stewart guy. Okay, so we had a lot of things. Uh Mr.

SPEAKER_01

Smith goes to Washington. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Um, and then a wonderful life. We had to watch that every Thanksgiving. Every Thanksgiving. Nope. Thanksgiving. Every Thanksgiving. Because we cut the tree, we cut the tree down on Black Friday for us. So that's when we watched it.

SPEAKER_01

Miracle on 34th Street. It's a wonderful life. That's a Christmas movie for me.

SPEAKER_02

What was the one? It was I I could be wrong. It reminds me of a uh Kevin Costner, but it's I think it's way too old to be him. He goes in for this poker game and turns out to be uh tombstone. No, I'm just kidding. I I don't remember what I I can picture it, but I can't he goes, uh Are you talking about Murray? So he there is Mel Gibson, the one that he's on the riverboat. Yeah, the gambler. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That was another one.

SPEAKER_01

That's a great movie. Maverick that's a great movie, but dude, Mel Gibson's older movies are so underrated. Nobody talks about his stuff anymore, but he had some good ones, dude. Maverick is a great movie, dude. That was like on TNT. He's talking about like TNT movies that would come up. I can picture like a shower work or that channel, TNT.

SPEAKER_02

But this guy, it's in the back of the alley, and the guy gets like shot in the back of the alley. It'll be like an old like 20s movie. Oh, we're wondering like a 20s movie. It's like set in the 20s. No, it's Godfather. No part two. No, no, no. Uh I don't want to say the good fellows either. Um, that was in the 70s. Just set in the 20s, not made in the 20s.

SPEAKER_01

Good fellows?

unknown

Okay.

SPEAKER_01

70s? No. 80s? Oh, you know what I'm thinking of is the other one with Sonny. That's another good one. What's that called? Where the kid's the kid and he gets older. Yeah. That's a good one. That's 70s. Robert De Niro's in it. He's the dad that's not a mafia guy. The Sting. Oh, The Sting? Yeah, it's Robert Redford. Robert Redford.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, but I think of Kevin Costner whenever we see Robert Redford.

SPEAKER_01

The Sting is a good movie. Actually, I'm a big Robert Redford guy. I've seen about everything he's been. No, he's he's dead now. He just recently died. He was a couple of years. Very old. I want to say two years ago. Great, great actor.

SPEAKER_02

I mean, just but the sting was probably like the sting and maverick were like the most like violent extreme movies.

SPEAKER_01

Those those are violent movies. Like for somebody who doesn't watch Halloween, that's kind of like people get gunned down for sure.

SPEAKER_02

I could see the sting for like Halloween. And gambling are in

Halloween Plans And How To Support

SPEAKER_02

those. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Well, that's just random. Like, we're not watching Halloween movies, but here's Maverick. Yeah. We had a weird, yeah, weird setup. Okay.

SPEAKER_04

Sure, yeah. So this Halloween, I will be sitting out in my driveway with a with a fire pit giving out candy to all the neighborhood kiddos. And uh you guys will be giving away your booze. Booze and candy. Booze and candy.

SPEAKER_01

And and we usually walk around the neighborhood once or twice. Yeah. We'll probably make popcorn balls, because why the hell not? And we we usually have pizza. Pizza.

SPEAKER_02

Yep. I gotta figure out some bottle to bring for me to enjoy. Yeah, usually it's gonna be cold.

SPEAKER_00

I like to make a good chili on Halloween.

SPEAKER_01

We've polished away a liter of uh of uh wild turkey. Wild turkey rye one-on-one. Yeah. Well we well, we have uh I usually do a um cider. A cider uh with spiked cider. And I also have shot like different things for shots that I do as alongside it for whoever reason.

SPEAKER_04

All right. Well, however, you're celebrating Halloween, I hope you have a great one. Eat lots of candy and uh hopefully have a great bottle or a great pipe to hang out with or both, or both, even better. Cheers, happy Halloween. Thank you for listening to the podcast.
