  • History of distillery
    • Issac Wolfe (I.W.) Bernheim immigrated from germany in 1848
      • Came to work in Ney York, but the company he wanted to work for went out of business
      • Got a job as a peddler of household items, going door to door throughout pennsylvania.  He did this UNTIL HIS HORSE DIED
      • Moved to Paducah, KY to be a bookkeeper for a liquor wholesaler
      • While there he made enough to move his brother to the US
    • Bernheim Bros distilling began in 1870
      • They moved to Louisville in 1888 and bought Pleasure Ridge Park Distillery and Bernheim Distillery was born
      • IN 1896, the bonded warehouse burned down.  They had insurance BUT the Unpaid Whiskey Tax was to much.
      • They were tied in court until 1897, the court decided they did not owe the tax as the whiskey was destroyed
      • They were allowed to continue producing through prohibition, but sold to Schenley Industries in1937. This was sold to Guiness in 1987, Which own Diagio
    • The return of the name
      • 1992, Bernheim Distilleries was opened again by united, owned by Guiness
      • The Bernheim brand was sold in Asia and europe, but was a top name in Japan
      • In 1999, Heaven Hill purchased Bernheim Distillery 
        • In 1996 the Bernheim distillery was destroyed in a Fire, so they bought the site
      • Bernheim Original wheat was introduced in 2005 by heaven hill, Named after IW Bernheim and his brother for their contributions to whiskey
    • But….. IW Harper?
      • IW Harper was reintroduced by Diageo in 2015, Using spirits from the Bernheim Distillery, Aged at Stitzel-Weller, and Bottled by George Dickle
